Where are all the old Dauntless?

In other factions, you see old people and kids. Where are they all in Dauntless? What happens when you can no longer fight and be warriors?

reply

Well this was actually really sad in the books. In dauntless, when you can no longer fight, they make you jump in the chasm, or you have to die another way...

reply

Most choose to. But they can become factionless too.

Book Questions:

How did Beatrice's mom get out of Dauntless alive and into (not factionless or homeless) her existing faction that Beatrice-Tris was born into? Your choice of faction is for life as stated at the opening ceremony.

Who were dauntless protecting everyone from? It said they were soldiers and police but there was world (fenced Chicago) peace. No street gangs or burning buildings shown in scenes with factionless people meandering the streets.

People are born into one faction, wherever their family is. When they come of age, they get to choose which faction to belong to for the rest of their lives. Tris grew up in Abnegation but picked Dauntless at her Choosing Ceremony; her mother grew up in Dauntless but picked Abnegation at her own Choosing Ceremony. Not sure why people are always confused by this.

Who was Dauntless protecting everyone from? No idea. If the whole point of this system is to have a society where there isn't crime and evil and problems everywhere, and indeed there isn't, then what do they need police for? What do they do all day? One of the many logical conundrums of this world setup. Apart from protecting everyone from the nonexistent crime, the Dauntless also guard the wall to protect against whatever is outside. But since there is obviously nothing going on for as far as anyone can see, and no one actually has any clue what's outside anyway, I have no idea what good that serves, either.

Thanks for the explanations. In the mother daughter case, I would think that mother would have told daughter at some point in her upbringing years. In the movie they made that revelation a big surprise. Almost like mother was dauntless but saw something along the way and changed careers/factions. I say that because in current time more than once a dauntless guy says "new rules", leading us to believe that rules/laws were not always as they are now.

In the protector case, I guess it is like the military of any country who is not at war with anyone. It's a just in case we need to situation. Maybe they train all day by jumping from it, didn't seem to be anyone else on it.

My memory is fuzzy, since it's been a long time since I read the books or saw the movies, but I think in Abnegation (and possibly the other factions, too - I don't really recall), once you choose Abnegation, Abnegation becomes your life. You are discouraged from speaking of your past life in another faction (and thus, holding onto it by reminiscing). You must fully be devoted to Abnegation and no other faction.

Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but members of Abnegation are discouraged from vanity or thinking/speaking of themselves. They focus their attentions outwardly in helping others. Tris' parents probably never spoke much about their past/past lives with their children.

Themselves. Dauntless are restless. Them being a faction is a form of isolation. they get to do their thing, play soldiers, get out of everyones hair. Imagine those people living among the Abdegation or the farmer faction, they would just keep causing trouble for everyone. When they have their faction on the other hand they are not interfering with other factions and this alone makes it more peaceful.

Also as you could have seen in the movie they are supposed to be "protection in case somone tries to get in through the wall". Its sort of like a military force of a country. even while at peace, a country keeps a certain amount of military active in case someone attacks.

I missed that part about Tris' mother picking Abnegation, but having come from Dauntless before the ceremony.

As far as what they do, I'd reckon internally, they're local law enforcement. There can still be scuffles, petty crimes, but larger issues like civil war or revolts
Of which ironically enough, Jeannine/Kate Winslet of Erudite managed to corrupt them for her own agenda

Otherwise, I do recall hearing one Dauntless say to another that their job was to protect everybody inside the walls, which could be domestic or foreign threats.

Iswallace82, I think you've got it the other way around. Tris's mother didnt choose Abnegation as the Choosing Ceramony, she chose Dauntless. Remember when she secretly met Tris to tell her how dangerous the last test in Dauntless is? Tris asked her how she knew about it and asks if she was once dauntless. If her mother was born Dauntless and chose Abnegation when she came of age, she wouldn't have known such tests existed.

But now I'm curious to know what faction she was indeed born into? Did I miss it in the film, or does it state it in the book?

In the book it is mentioned that the initiation for Abnegation isn't as harsh as, say, Dauntless. Since there is nothing to prevent an individual from leaving a faction it is conceivable a person could leave Dauntless for Abnegation. The movie didn't go into detail on how this was done, though, which could cause confusion.

According to the book, members of the Dautless faction are expected to keep themselves physically fit. Those that do not or can not do so (do to old age, for example) are kicked out and spend the rest of their lives factionless. Some, regretfully, commit suicide.

I was wondering where all the Dauntless kids were. And what happens to pregnant Dauntless women? They can't be as active while with a fetus in their womb.

reply

One would conclude exceptions are made in the case of such things as pregnancy.

As for what Dauntless does, I understood their two main purposes were guarding the exterior wall and acting as police for those who live in Chicago. They believed that there were evil people outside wall who had destroyed much of the world. As for the interior, I understood they did have crime, particularly from the factionless.
