Can Someone Explain to Me Why Freddy Hates Frank Underwood?

Im so sorry but I'm confused as to what exactly happened with Freddy that makes him hate Frank so much when he walks out on him?

reply

Freddie just being caught up in the beef with Birch

From memory Freddy hatred has been building up over the seasons: he lost his restaurant, his son to jail and his quiet life caught in Frank shenanigans and media exposure, Frank then give him -doesn't cost Frank anything- a job at the WH thinking that he would have him around as a cook and once he refuses that job to be a gardener Frank is recurrently forcing on him his self-centered discussions, Frank claims that Freddy is a "friend" but he has basically only been there all along to cook him ribs while listening to his rants, as demonstrated by Frank last request when Freddy is telling him that he would be leaving to work in some flower shop: hey why don't you just come home to cook me ribs one last time, "friend".

reply

Exactly, plus Freddie murmured to Remy what a awful man Francis was to have around and liked to duck back into the kitchen when Francis had a meal at his snack shack.

i agree with sensi. the relationship is just another representation of how frank uses people with something he wants and tricks them into thinking he really cares with the promise of fake, shallow connectedness. frank is unable to see his own dysfunction and that he comes off condescending and disingenuous.

Well on the other hand Frank didn't really have anything to do with Freddy losing his joint - that was his dumb gangbanger son's fault. You might say that if Frank wasn't around his restaurant he would remain unnoticed and none of that would happen but again that was something entirely out of Franks control. He might as well got shot by some crackhead if things were different. If the president comes to your restaurant because he likes your food so much I would say that's not a bad thing - and it wasn't - the restaurant deal came because of that publicity. He lost it because his dumb son couldn't keep his *beep* together - of course the investor had a paragraph protecting his investment if you turn out to be a criminal. He didn't have to sign it, he could have said no.
And the WH kitchen/gardening job - it didn't cost Frank anything, true, but it sure helped Freddy (btw Freddy rejected Franks direct money offer earlier). With his dumb son behind bars for parole violation he got the job he needed to provide for his grandson. He could have shown a little gratitude for that. Instead he turned out to be an ungrateful *beep* and thrown a tantrum at Frank while the reason why he lost his joint was only his and his son's fault.
Freddy said that he considered Frank a good customer, not a friend. He talked *beep* about him behind his back too. From this perspective it was Freddy who was two-faced liar. Frank is a self absorbed person but he had no malicious intentions towards Freddy. So he didn't like Frank as a person, okay, but Frank still paid well as a customer. And in the end Frank didn't have to do anything for Freddy but he did get him that job he needed. To me it seems that Frank was actually the good guy in this relationship and Freddy walked out on him for no reason really. Or because the president of the US asked him to come over sometime and cook ribs ? Since he didn't consider Frank a friend but a customer what's the problem? If he wasn't as dumb as his son he could have made some more money this way.

Good answer.

Exactly what I thought. And Freddy's ego and pride are too big, that they are actually bigger than Frank's.

Your mind makes it real.

Freddie's pride was apart of it he really should have taken the money (it was money Frank was offering right?). But a black man of his age has probably swallowed his pride plenty of times

Goodbye IMBb :(

What I don't get was why Freddy lost his restaurant. I saw the scene where some guy was offering him money to franchise it or something but then the next thing I knew, Freddie was applying for an "America Works" gig and that is when Frank offered him a job at the WH.

What did I miss?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's the only explanation I can think of as well (other than bad screenwriting :-D). I'm not sure if it's better explained in the book but certainly in the show it makes very little sense because Frank never actually done anything wrong to Freddy and he really seems to have no reason to hate him. And as I pointed out even if he dislikes him as a person why not take it as an opportunity to make more money ? Even the new job Freddy got is a result of him being gardener at WH thanks to Frank.

I don't think he's in the original book, I don't remember an equivalent in the original UK series.

reply

Actually, it is a bad thing if the President came to your place too often because in reality they have to empty the place out for security and it would lose money.

Ironically, Freddy is one of the few people Frank genuinely likes and considers as a friend. He is just so narcissistic and un-empathethic to other people's feelings, he can't see the damage he does to those he loves. He has hurt Claire and Meechum in the same way because he always puts himself first, and then is genuinely flawed when he is called out for it, for which both Claire and Freddy have done.

Freddie chose the media exposure. He gave an interview without even telling Frank about it. That is what put Freddie on the radar. He also never told Frank he killed two people and went to prison. That's on HIM. And then obviously the crap with his son. Should Frank have turned on him like he did? No, but he didn't do anything to hurt Freddie. And Freddie sure as hell enjoyed the money and attention Frank brought him.

reply

well frank is a sociopath, normal folks can sense this if they are around them too long. he just snapped, he probably doesn't hate Frank at all, just got sick of being in front of a soulless being.

reply

Freddie hated all the publicity he got... seems to be one of the roots, if not the root, for Freddie's hatred of Frank.

reply

He's an ex-con with a chip on his shoulder. He has no right to resent Frank since Frank gave him a job in the WH that he used as a springboard to get another job. I thought Freddy would take pride in cooking ribs at the WH. How many people can say that they cooked a meal at the White House? That would be a cool story.
