New WB Boss Blasts Executives For Green Lighting Clint Eastwood’s Cry Macho

Viewer Question:
Darryl Meyers Drew - It looks like the Axe Of Zaslav cuts so deeply it even transcends time and space. Not only is the guy shutting down and killing underperforming and bad projects, he’s also holding execs accountable for past mistakes at the company. Just read that he grilled movie execs at WB over Clint Eastwood’s El Macho since it was obvious that movie would lose the studio money. Do you think that was harsh of him?

I think Zaslav is a jerkass but on this I agree. Don't green-light movies if it's obviously going to be a flop.

Eastwood's last couple of films in which he starred/directed performed extremely well so I assume they were expecting Cry Macho (despite being released during the pandemic) to perform better than it did... remember that The Mule grossed 175 million worldwide.

Studios can't predict what will or won't work, it's easy to assume they bet on Eastwood's track record... no other 90 year old actor/director out there is getting projects so easily approved by any studio.
