Maybe people who are less historically aware believed what the desk guy at Ellis Island told her but I knew it was a total scam from the get go. He quoted a never existed law and when the pimp arrived it was clear what the scam was.

Is that sarcasm ? Yes I presume so. But I have written a screenplay set in the period prior to that which makes THE IMMIGRANT seem like an After School Special.

Just saw this movie on Netflix. I think you're right; Bruno seemed to be hanging around on Ellis Island especially to find attractive young immigrant women. He certainly had an eye on Ewa, and he may have had a deal with the officer to put her in a bad situation.
