Re: Dr Barden

Him going to the house with a gun served no purpose. He didn't do a single thing help anyone. The movie worked just the same without him.

I agree. He could have been left out after introducing Iris and Lambrick. I have a couple theories of why he was there though:
1. Most likely, he was added for suspense, as it gives a sense of hope in escaping.
2. They were trying to balance the actor's pay and work, and decided that instead of cutting his income, they gave him more unnecessary scenes.
3. They did it for that one cheesy jump scare where he gets shot.

I mean no disrespect, but that was about as much a jump scare as the ending had a surprise twist. 

I know. But I still feel that could've been why they included him. He served no purpose otherwise.

As soon as it showed him at home contemplating what he was gonna do, I turned to my girlfriend and said. "This guy is gonna get Scatman Caruthersed" She didn't know what I meant. Hopefully someone here appreciates it.

This fan of The Shining, appreciates it.

Guys, guys! He was absolutely there for a purpose! Think about his last words! He said to Iris, 'I should have just told you about...' before he was shot.

(Spoiler Alert!)

Obviously, he was going to say 'I should have just told you about Obamacare'.

Couldn't agree more. He had a net benefit of zero, I mean besides making Bevans waste a bullet. And speaking of Bevans wasting a bullet, the moment Dr. Barden started into his soliloquy I knew he was dead. Really? Now is the time for giving an apology speech? How about save that for when you're safe! Besides, there were so many other options than be a vigilante where he was way out of his element.

reply

He did about as much help as Hallorann in "The Shining"
