So let me get this straight

It's okay when Dwayne Johnson plays a mythical Greek hero character like Hercules, but it's a problem that Matt Damon plays a fictional European character in a Chinese fantasy film?

reply

Nope, the problem are the other non-European characters.

reply

What about them?

reply

Should be with white people only.

its called pandering.
if these was an all chinese film, the movie would not have been brought over.
at most, as a blu ray release.

its the same problem with the forbidden kingdom, they HAD to put a white character in it or else the movie would not have been brought over to cinemas. instead of an epic reteling of journey to the west/legend of the monkey king featuring jackie chan vs jet li, we got.... the forbidden kingdom.

So they say. I might even buy it, had Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon not come out years earlier.

I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people.

reply

1 movie, out of 100's. WHOOPTY DOO.

the movie 47 ronin would probably not have been made like THAT if keanu reeves wasnt involved. what a better way to honor the memory of 47 ronin than have a westerner out-japanese all of them and take the spot.

last samurai: what a better way to honor the dying days of the samurai class than have a westerner out-samurai actual, real samurai and descendants of samurai.

see what im getting at?

next up, journey to the west and romance of the three kingdoms: starring western people and 2 chinese actors: jackie chan and jet li as generic soldier #4 and slain peasant #725. coming 2020-21

Dwayne Johnson is pretty ethnically ambiguous, and also no one saw/cared about Hercules.

But it's a straw man argument because a ton of people were pissed when Idris Elba played Heimdall in Thor. And when there was even just talk of Idris Elba being Jame Bond or Donald Glober being Spiderman, a ton of people (White I'm assuming, but maybe others) were up in arms. Or when Rue was a black girl in Hunger Games, a ton of people were complaining, even though she was described as being of a darker skin tone in the books. So there are plenty of people who get upset when even a fictional comic book character isn't played by someone White.

Dwayne Johnson's Father was black and his mother is Samoan heritage, which means The Rock is black. How is he, then, Ethnically ambiguous? Halle Berry's mother is white and her father is black ... and she is black. The same with Alicia Keys (white mother, black father). Lenny Kravitz had a black mother and a white father ... and he is black. Vin Diesel had a black father and a white mother as well.

Halle Berry ain't black.

Do you even realize how stupid this sounds? So no matter what your heritage if you have a parent who is even a smidgen black, you are black?

This is what's wrong with the world.

Who cares? I mean really, just because there are a few ignorant people left in the world we have to tag everyone into a slot?

Move on.

There is nothing left to see here.

I prefer established characters in American source material try to stay close to the source material. That's not to say I won't watch something like the upcoming Dark Tower movie, I will. But that doesn't mean I feel Elba was the best choice as Roland. Its no different when someone complains about any deviation from the source material.

reply

The difference is those are established characters that people are attached to in a franchise, so any small change no matter how stupid is going to incite outrage from the nerd hoard.

What established character is Matt Damon replacing that was traditionally a chinese character?

Dwayne Johnson is ethnically ambiguous to ignorant people, this is true.

He sure isn't white. And he doesn't hide his affinity for Samoan culture.

To ignorant viewers, be they in America or anywhere else, he probably is ethnically ambiguous, much like Cliff Curtis, or any other Maori is, unless they say "Hey, I'm Maori". Because he isn't bang-on black, or bang-on white, or a fat Samoan, or obviously Asian.

It all gets very confusing and difficult for white people to label people by their ethnicity with all this intermingling, and muddying of racial groupings. And we know how important it is for white people to categorise EVERYTHING, and thereby effectively lay claim to it. If an actor is bits of something that cannot be easily determined, or cateogorised and thus determined to be 'foreign', they slide under the racial radar of these latently bigoted white folk, and can achieve success in Hollywood via their ethnic ambiguity. It just becomes too difficult to maintain prejudices in the face of so much racial complication.

Picture the mental equation of the latent racist when seeing one of those coffee coloured black girls in a magazine. You know the ones chosen so as to not offend bigoted subscribers, and appeal to black people that bought the messaging white is beautiful, but are too proud to admit it to themselves. You know like black people in an ipod ad. In their heads they quickly attempt to categorise by ethnicity to determine her worth: "Is she hot? Yes, I think she is. But she is kind of black... She obviously has some white in her too, though.... she is actually smoking hot. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, and assume she is only 1/4 black." fap fap fap

Of course all that (except the fap fap fap bit, but possibly not) would happen at the speed of light when they sat down to watch The Rock, or Cliff Curtis pretending to be some ethnicity they weren't, or no ethnicity at all!

Because you would never cast a chinese actor to play Heimdall! why make him black then except for more tokenism!

If Spiderman was black I would tell people Parker is retiring and give the mantel to Miles Morales

Okay for Rue Dark can many many things Indians are dark malayisains are dark so how can Rue be black and only black?

Oh yeah since again thats stealing white roles I wouldnt cast a white guy to play Luke Cage now would you cast someone white to play Luke Cage

your either biased or a bigot so your saying Keanu reeves is fully chinese since his father was chinese

The Rock might think he is Samoan, or he might think he is black, or he might think you are full of crap.

We'd have to ask The Rock.

And you know what he would say?

"IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!"

reply

The tokenism is Jewish Hollywood pandering to gringos.
Enough with the pandering already!

reply

it has nothing to do with race bending. this movie is a continuation of the long white savior tradition, following nonsense like avatar, the last samurai, dances with wolves, and so on. some people have a problem with that. personally, i dont particularly care and am more amused with how astonishingly awful this movie looks.

reply

To be fair Dances was a lot less offensive, and the Indians ended up protecting him, not the reverse.
