I had no idea there was so many white guys in ancient China

I don't care if he is a white guy, playing a white guy. He looks really out of place.

reply

I saw the premiere for the mystery of the Great Wall, then fade, then . . . . Matt Damon.

I thought, you got to be effin' kiddin'.

He might as well be playin' a Japanese character.

The way they cut the trailer gives this a real hilarious effect.

"One of mankind's greatest wonders.... 1700 years to build... 5500 miles long... what were they trying to keep out? MATT DAMON"

Maybe I'm just silly, but that made me lol

😂

"I'm not arguing that with you. I know he can get the job, but can he do the job?"

Had to check the trailer because of that comment, and your right, that was some funny ass shlt 

I just LOL'd like for real. lol.

There were westerners in parts of ancient China. The film itself shows only a few so if history matters, in the case of a fantasy film it shouldn't, but if it does rest assured it is possible, though I am not sure if they looked like Matt Damon :).

reply

China was a closed society. They werent conquerors or traders. They didnt Want anyone else in. Hence why the marco polo story is so famous.

reply

Conquerors is 50/50(you can say they were not or they were) to me, I am neutral. But not traders? I completely disagree. Let's start with road trade, silk road, what is it for? To trade silk(and all sort of exotic goods, of course) to the west. They even did trading with Roman on BC, so more than 2000 years ago.

What about sea trade? The most famous example would be Zheng He's treasure voyages(seven times in total) around the world. Zheng He sailed all over the world for many purposes and trading was one of them.

Yes, there were a period of that they banned outside trade, leading to Opium War but that was only about 200+ years of isolationism from a country that has been around for thousands of years; they were not a closed society.

reply

I guess no one really read the plots before they backlash the whitewashing.
Their characters are mercenaries who were sent to China to steal the secret of gunpowder.
So they are from western countries, not white people who live in ancient China, or whitewash Chinese.

But yeah, Matt Damon is in it because they want a A list to make sure the movie can make money in US. They spent 150 million plus promotion fees, no chance they will earn that amount back by just launching it in China. It's like include a Chinese actor in a Hollywood movie to obtain the Chinese market (such as Iron Man, Transformers, Now You See Me), vice versa. Yet Damon seems to have a lot more cameo.

reply

"Whitewashing" seems like an awful anti-white smearword to me.

reply

It certainly is. Miss Moneypenny was made black in the Bond films, but you don't hear the term blackwashing. But then fans of identity politics think you can never be racist to white people. They're actually that stupid.

reply

a few whites were in china and even the Northern region of Japan look up the Aniu people of Japan

Whites got around a hell of a lot. Indeed our lands were a lot more comprehensive than they are now as we spend more time developing, building and in technological innovation that other races who spend most time just humping each other.

Anyhow whites were around in China thousands of years before some wall was built there. Good looking whites too. Even their mummies are better looking than the people there now. You see there's even mummified evidence so not even a bunch of *beep* SJWs can dispute it.

Shame.

Indo-European isn't white moron BWHAHAHAHA. White people weren't invented until some racist German pulled the ultimate race card in the 17th century.

By the way, you know that many of the central asians have what you might consider "european" genes, right? It's called human migration.

Even if those mummies were the kind of "whites" you're thinking of, they were probably servants, criminals and/or outcasts. The narratives you people fabricate where you're the center of everything is F-ING HILARIOUS.

reply

A handful of mummies in the Tarim basin don't count as being in China. The Tarim Basin is not the heart of China.

reply

Mummy is ugly as *beep*.
Not white either.
You're delusional and come as really racially insecure/try hard.

AInu are definitely not white people. They are related to Polynesians.

Saying "look up the ainu people of Japan" is a bit like saying there were white people in Australia before European explorers got there, "look up the aborigines".

How about you look up the ainu...?

every race has fabricated something and the myths are still there! black people say there more native american then white on white well the truth has come out with DNA testing LOOK IT UP

reply

Tell me about the DNA testing of the Ainu people and how this relates to Caucasians in China...

"black people say"... What black people???

The fact you would say something like "black people say..." says more about the validity of what you are saying than what you claim 'black people say'.

Never mind the limited intelligibility of these sentences:

"every race has fabricated something and the myths are still there! black people say there more native american then white on white well the truth has come out with DNA testing LOOK IT UP "

First off race is rubbish. It's an arbitrary distinction cooked up by people that thought black people weren't even human, Slavic people were something in between, and Asians were all yellow. As if we had all descended or ascended from Adam and Eve along different lines. It was a tool of racism and colonialism. It meant the 'superior' white man, could legitimately claim varying amounts of sovereignty over the lives of the 'inferior' races.

Get over 'race' being a useful distinction for humans based on their genetics - it isn't. Ethnicity formed in parallel, simultaneously, and usually with a lot of sharing of DNA between ethnic groups. There is no meaningful line in the sand where one race stops and another begins.

I'm going to remove the dumb from what you said:

"Every culture has fabricated myths of their origins, and some are still maintained"

I agree, although the smarter, or more educated, might inspect, question and reinterpret those myths, and recognise them for what they are... I do not literally think the Emperor of Japan's ancestors came from the sun, I hope very few Japanese do either. His clan was the Sun, another clans was the Bear, Sun dominated, Bear faded, that is all.

Your second sentence is utterly unintelligible.

Are some black people claiming to be native American..?

Or are some black people claiming that white people are native American...?

What does the DNA testing prove?

Please clarify.

I might have heard of some black people making a claim of descendance or kinship with Native Americans. It is hardly one I hear often.

What that article says is that African Americans were (historically and proportionately) much more likely to have intermarried and interbred with Native Americans than white people. Today (according to that article) the numbers are disproportionate by a factor of four. This number would have to be much, much higher the further back one goes.

So it is in part myth, and in part truth...

Remember two things:

1) those numbers are for current populations. They do not apply to 'Grandma Mary Louise Jenkins' who being a Grandma is two or three generations older, and might very well have had much more than one great grandparent that was full Indian.

In fact she might even have been one, being that the statistics provided in the quoted article suggest she had every chance that one of her parents was full blooded. If so odds are she was half Indian! And it seems safe to say there was a half that chance she was full Indian!

and 2) it's a bogus web article.

reply

If there is no meaningful line, then how does affirmative action work?

You genius.

reply

It sounds like you are suggested I am dumber than you, I don't think this is particularly fair.

Let me explain why you are a moron:

1) you don't know the difference between the concept of race, and the concept of ethnicity, and you are calling me stupid.

Let me try to explain for you, since like the other dullard you are too lazy and dumb to go use a wikipedia page to reduce your dimwittedness.

Affirmative action, or inverse racism does not recognise race. It recognises ethnicity. It 'works' by identifying an under-performing ethnic minority (typically), and attempts to uplift that entire under-performing minority by privileging some few of them to positions (of education, employment, finance etc).

The desired affect of which is a raised expectation of society, and a reversal of the appearance of racial typing, and racism in general in wider society.

Now since you brought it up (I didn't, I was talking about race being arbitrary), what constitutes this minority is a line in the sand drawn (nearly) as arbitrarily as the one that divides 'Indian' from Asian, Polynesian, European etc etc. These are broad categories, any point where Polynesian, and Asian ends, in an ethnic or genetic sense is certainly arbitrary.

Or do you think all 'black' people, recognised by affirmative action programs, are 100% black?

Do you perhaps think there is a point, a specific amount of black ancestry, where someone ceases to suffer racism, either directly for their perceived ethnicity, or indirectly as a result of centuries of institutionalised racism?

Since you claim some semblence of genius... what is that point? Because I can guarantee you that there is a point where all that affirmative action stops, not because your family are poor, or disenfranchised, or you have low expectations as a result of historic racism, but because the government, or organisation in question determines you to not be quite enough that ethnicity to deserve support.

Similarly, there are going to be people recognised as such a minority, whose family avoided, or overcame that historic racism, but simply by merit of their being recognised as that minority they will, as individuals, receive support denied to others more needing that assistance.

It is a clumsy tool, that works most of the time.

Ethnicity is similarly a clumsy tool that works most of the time.

Race is an even more clumsy tool, that worked really well for racist white people, most of the time.

Marco Polo was off over there and his travels well, if perhaps not reliably, documented.

Other Europeans (why are we calling them 'white', there were certainly no people that looked like Matt Damon running around there in the 13th century) made it well into China much earlier. Romans were recruited as soldiers much earlier, and Greek and others traded and explored.

Why are we caring? Did you see the armour the Chinese sgenerals are wearing, they look like they took what Kurosawa did in Ran, and then went full Manga retard. Nevermind that the ridiculously out of scale great wall is there to defend against demons and dragons.

This is pure fantasy. And given the mores of mainstream Chinese cinema, it will doubtless legitimise great ole China, and engage in a lot of sympathetic myth-making. Maybe it will even claim Taiwan...!

Who cares.

Check it out:

"This is not an historical film. It is a science fiction.

It all takes place hundreds of year from now after a nuclear war Donald Trump started with Mexico that nearly ended civilization.

In the post-Trump wasteland only a few ridiculously costumed and inexplicably Asian survivors guard a great wall built to contain the mutant Mexican hordes intent on destroying the humans and taking their jobs.

Into this unlikely scenario rides the man with no credibility. Only though his whiteness can the Mexican hordes finally be vanquished, because the Asian-alien people are just too straight up dumb to do it for themselves."

reply

He looks really out of place.

More so than CGI monsters in a "historical" flick?

reply

I don't think it is ancient China. They are after gunpowder which wasn't invented until 1000 AD, wasn't known to westerners for another 300 years. I don't think its contemporary to the building of the Great Wall. The 1300s is squarely in the era of European discovery.
