shareIf the story called for an Asian person in the role than yes but the screen play clearly is about a westerner finding his way to China looking for gunpowder and falls into this situation. It's basically a fish out of water story with monsters. It's a method of storytelling where Damon is basically a vehicle to introduce the story and a way for the story to be told of what is going on. It's no more white washing than The Equalizer with Denzel Washington being black washing.

Now when you have a made for black television series that has a black hero, a black criminal mastermind, a black mayor, a black lead homocide detective, and a lot of tertiary white characters the line of plausibility in an American reality has been stretched to the point of breaking.
I'm sure you could conceive of a variant of this story that didn't involve Matt Damon, or any other white person, with nearly every other element present.
What it wouldn't be doing is pandering to a cinema going crowd that either needed a white face and a white story, or an Asian crowd that desired the 'legitimacy' a white face apparently brings to the production.
There are plenty of movies with all Asian casts made in China. This one happens to be a story that needs a white cast member. This is being paid for and made by the Chinese it's kind of silly to say they shouldn't be able to make a movie unless it only has Asians in it. Or is it that you object to the fact that it's a white guy would you make this much of a stink if it was some African guy who went to China?

If the African guy would drum up international interest, be more marketable than an Asian lead, in an Asian film, and make more bank in U.S box offices - sure.
