The wealth meant nothing

You understand what motivated Kahlen to make the heath into a land that could produce crops and bring him wealth and prestige. His back ground and the fact that he was looked down on drove him on. Ludwig Kahlen was also a proud man. In the end, his success meant nothing as he had no one to share it with. Compare him with Daniel Day Lewis' character Daniel Plainview at the end of There Will be Blood. He did not care that he was alone.
