Cancelled because it was not accurate enough

S1 had fiction too, but it was mostly accurate, the Pazzi conspiracy, Leo as a war engineer and it even touched his sexuality, S2 was a mess, the 2 pope storyline sucked, the book of leaves shoulda been a subplot easily ended without him having to go to some native island, S3 did even worst, they didn't try to make Lucrezia the inspiration for Monalisa neither did they touch Leo as a painter, they destroyed the plot with Leo's mom being alive and being a witch, then the sister plot.

The first season was great, sadly the show took a turn for worst in S2, people felt alienated as it's supposed to be a historic drama not historic fiction show, deservedly cancelled.
