Why do they recommend the chicken?? (I've never played the game and came into the movie with zero foreknowledge)

What would you rather eat when you are about to run, jump and climb for hours. the chicken or steak? Steak would be the worst option, as it would sit with you longer and make you sleepy.. depending on how much you eat.

Idk, no one mentioned steak until he ordered it. It was an open menu... why recommend the chicken so strongly when he can eat anything at all??

They were forcing jokes in the movie, so I am not going to try and defend it.

It was a test of free will, to see if Cal would let himself get influenced by the persons around him (like the common people, who are being endoctrined by the Templars) or defy the advice and make his own choice (like a true Assassin). They wanted to see if he could become one of them.

Yeah, that's why the other guy said "steak for the pioneer!" He made his own choice, instead of conforming to what was expected of him.
