They should make a real Assassins film

The story of the real Assassins is worth telling and it's very interesting. I think it could make for a really good epic. Mel Gibson would be amazing for it.

You mean the islamic sect?

What's the story? Couldn't really see one in there.

And risk getting deported, or having a wall built around them?
I doubt anyone on Hollywood will be touching subjects even remotely like that for a while...

reply

Dude, get real. No one is getting deported. They already are touching subjects like that. The story of the Assassins is a very interesting one. They literally just did it but with a Spanish character instead of an Arab one. Same villains anyway. Crusaders/Templars.

reply

"Get real", you say... People just went ape over the *rumour* that a dog was briefly ill-treated during filming, to the point where PETA had everyone screaming about boycotting the film and all the cast/crew (whether they were involved in the scene or not).
Finally the producer stepped in and spoke up, the truth has come out and things have calmed, but damage has already been done. As is, PETA are still screaming over the plight of what is actually a pure CGI dog, despite every stage of the computer design work being publicised.

Now you want 'a film about Mozzies, who kill important people for political reasons'... Yeah, I don't think the United States of Paranoia is quite ready for that, given recent events, eh?

reply

You're comparing two very different cases and two very different audiences. These Assassins weren't your usual ''Mozzies''. They were Niziri Ismailis and they killed bad people not good people. Furthermore, the only audience that would lose their minds would be the hill billies and rednecks, who aren't exactly representative of America or its movie going public, which is mostly liberal and supportive of Muslims. If they didn't lose it watching Kingdom of Heaven, which was a box-office success by the way, they won't lose sleep over this one.

reply

It's not about the audiences to whom these films might appeal. It's about the people who will shout loudly and slate it, even if they've not seen the film. It's about the people who would, out of principle, rally against something and/or bury it in favour of cartoon cars and Adam Sandler movies. It's about the clueless press who would rather report something bad than something good and the people who follow them.

It's also about the public in general, especially the myriad stupid ones who, in spite of things like university education, *will* still believe mere rumour.
You start making serious films all about "Muslim Assassins", there will be some outcry.

Kingdom of Heaven was mostly about white guys, by the way. Muslims were the enemy for a good part of it.

reply

No one is going to give a *beep* about the Muslim Assassins. As for Kingdom of Heaven, it portrayed the Crusaders as blood-thirsty animals and showed the Arabs kicking their asses and behaving like civilized people. The crusaders were not the heroes of that film by any means. Apart from Bailan and Baldwin they were portrayed as villains. We're living in an era were there are tons of Muslims on TV and in films, many of them in good roles. What are you talking about? They've been making films about Arabs and Muslims since film became an industry. The Assassins film would be nothing but another historical epic. You're reading too much into it.

reply

KoH may well have shown Crusaders in a bad light, but I promise you people were still rooting for the white guys.
And you can put as many Muslims on TV in awesomely heroic roles as you like, people will still start jumping on it with prejudices firmly in hand... because that's what a lot of people are really like. People are stupid, people are retards, people believe what the fearmongering papers tell them and people are NOT to be trusted. Hell, the number of British idiots who voted Brexit, without actually knowing what the word meant, or who voted "in protest" of their limited options, is evidence enough.

Sure, there will be a small audience that take a genuine interest in such a film, but half those will be fans of the game and another quarter will seem enlightened, but will descend into the usual moronic jokes the instant they and their friends are back outside the theatre.
I would not trust people to refrain from letting their uninformed prejudices spoil such an endeavour. That kind of cultural change takes decades and possibly generations, not a few memes on Farcebook and a couple of token heroes in the occasional TV series.

Did you read the article? The Assassin's had nothing to do with the crusade or templars:

The Assassins were eradicated by the Mongol Empire during the well-documented invasion of Khwarizm.

reply

The Assassins fought the Crusaders and at times killed Arab Muslim politicians too. They were destroyed by the Mongol assault on their enclave. They existed however before that, and were an interesting group. They were involved with a lot of political assassinations at the time. When Saladin went against them, one of them left him a poisoned cake in his tent with a note. They wanted to project strength and show that they could get to him.

reply

Yes. The story is the same as the Assasins Creed. The game itself take its plot from there. They fought Crusaders ( Templars ). There's a lot of interesting stuff about them, especially when it comes to their relationship to the Crusaders and Arab Empires/Caliphates. They were on their own living in the mountains and sort of went after both whenever provoked.

reply

Everyone who is interested in the game's stories, may play the friggin games. The point of the film is to tell a different story about different people.

Nolan, I love you forever!

reply

It could be interesting if it was handled correctly and not botched. One thing that would be intriguing to show would be what Jean de Joinville recorded of the encounter involving Louis IX, the Templars, and the Assassins.

reply

The story of the Assassins is worth telling and it makes for a good epic. There's many stories about them that are just fascinating. Their way of life in their mountain enclaves is another aspect of their story which I think would make for a good film.
