Could have succeeded with a smaller budget
If you look at Dracula Untold, it managed to make 217 million on a 70 million budget. The movie had lots of CGI and practical effects.

But with a smaller budget this would be a different movie. And, honestly, look at all this Spanish sequences... how could it possibly been done with a lesser budget? Actually, $125 million is an understated number by itself. The real budget is much close to $200 million. The Ubisoft CEO has said that it is not far from that number, and $75 is pretty far, to put it lightly.
