I saw the movie yesterday, my thoughts (spoilers)

Let me start by saying that I didn't play any of the games. I only did the tutorial of the first one so I don't know much if anything about Assassin's Creed. I still wanted to see it given the fact that the game is so positively received by fans and reviews and I liked the idea of the story and the Animus.

As for the movie itself; I always try to not have high expectations of movies when I go see them. I don't even watch trailers to avoid spoilers or anything like that. Still, having seen the movie with an 'as neutral as possible' expectation I really didn't like it. I think it's really bad. I thought it was going to be at least 'ok' judging by the 6.4 it has here on IMDb (ok, maybe I expected it to be something). The problem isn't the story but the writing and editing of the movie. It's all very sloppy and rushed. Here's a list of things I don't like about the movie:

- Nothing is explained about the characters; who are all those people in 1492? Who is the girl who is with Cal (the one who dies)? Who are the others? We know nothing. I didn't understand what they were supposed to do there. 'Get the prince' ok, but why exactly? Who is he anyway? And why do they need him? I must have missed something I guess. I was confused the whole time they were in 1492.

- Marion Cotillard's performance is terrible; I think she's a pretty good actress but the whole movie she has the same stupid look on her face and shows no emotion. I get that she is supposed to be a more cold and emotionless character given the work that she does but does that mean she has to stand there like a mannequin? It never changes, even when her father lies to her in the end of the movie (I don't even understood what happened there, I must admit that by that time I was having problems focussing on the movie). Why didn't she become angry? Why didn't she shout at him? All she did was stand there with that same look on her face she had the whole movie. I really hated that

- Scenes seem to be missing; something I've read about here and there. The original cut is 140 mins. but the theatrical release is 115 min. and I think it shows. During the whole movie they jump from scene to scene and each time that happens you think 'what the hell just happened? Where are we now?'. The worst was when they found the location of the Apple and they were going to get it. I was expecting them to Indiana Jones their way to the grave and find the Apple but no, what happened was this:
* They find out the location
* Cut to some Jaguars pulling up in front of a church
* Cut to a priest handing them the Apple

When I saw that I almost jumped out of my seat. I mean, from what I understood the Apple is one of the biggest secrets in the world. Nobody knows about its location. In fact a whole Animus supercomputer was invented and developed to even TRY and find it but some priest in Spain keeps it in his locker in a small box???? What the hell? Not cool. Cutting out scenes like this makes the movie unwatchable. I almost felt like I was watching a trailer instead.

- The other patients were lame and I don't think people would behave like that in a real life. They did nothing, they just sat there. And again, you don't even know who they are or how they got there. I hated those scenes.

- Only a small part of the movie is set in 1492. I don't get this, why? Cal has to find the Apple which is the most important thing in the whole movie. In fact, it basically IS the movie. But despite that, he only goes into the Animus twice and when he's in there he doesn't seem to do much except running away and fight. Then it cuts to a scene on the roof of a building which happens to be right on top of where the Apple is. I think that we see only about 20-30 mins. of 'Animus', it really should have been the other way around.

- Fancy shots of the camera flying over cities. I got it when they did it the first time. They want to show off the nice city they created in CGI, it's a bit of eye candy and that's fine. But why do we have to see that every time he goes in the Animus? It felt unnecessary and like a waste of time. And what's with the bird?

- The ending; what was that all about? This isn't Inception, it's an Assassin's Creed movie, so no need for half-open endings like they did with this one. Is the Apple supposed to be destroyed or are they going to use it for something else? It's not explained in the movie, probably because the scene was cut.

I could go on and on but I think I wrote down some of my biggest problems of the movie. It's such a shame, if the movie was written and edited better, it could have been a great and enjoyable movie but now I think it was unwatchable. This movie really takes itself way too seriously.
