Was the release date a subtle nod?

The movie was released on December 21st (the date the world was supposed to end in the assassins creed series). Do you guys think this was a conscious decision to release it on this date or just a coincidence?

Ubisoft actually confirmed it was meant as a subtle nod. :)

It is a nod towards AC 3 and the "end of the world" thing that people thought would happen back on Dec. 21st 2012.
