Why has Callum's dad (Spoiler)

Why has Callum's dad killed his mother? If it was only so Templar's wouldn't get her, why hasn't he also killed himself?

Also another question: why have they put all those ex-assassins or whoever they were in one place and let them wander freely? Shouldn't they be caged or better killed off, once they weren't useful anymore?

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. 

Cals mother was the genetic link to Aguilar, they could have used her to find the apple the way they used Cal. His father didn't have that link. As for keeping them all alive...maybe they were still tracing histories, looking for other ancestors that could have useful information? Or as curiosities.
