The 1492 Assassins were idiots

How does chopping off your fingers help?

I take it you didn't play the games? It's cool if you didn't, this wasn't explained in the movie:

In the first game (during the Third Crusade), it was necessary to sever the ring finger in order to use the hidden blade. The blade, when extended, would protrude where the ring finger would be. This allowed the Assassins to stab their targets with their fists closed, thus concealing the blade completely.

However, the main character of that game, Altair, would go on to modify the blade so that the ring sacrifice was no longer necessary. The Spanish Brotherhood in this film severed the finger as a symbolic dedication to the Creed. But other Assassins alive at the same time- like Ezio, the protagonist of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th games- just branded his ring finger during the initiation and used the blades with all fingers intact.

So, it's more of a "we're super dedicated" kind of thing. Hope that helps! :)

Leonardo Da Vinci modified the blade so that there was no need to remove the ring finger

reply

yes, based on Altair's plan. I think Altair had the vision for this new "hidden blade", but it needed a really expert dude like Leonardo to pull it off.

reply

Well, remember that Giovanni Auditore used the blade without severing his finger. Altair actually made it happen; Leonardo read Altair's explanation in the Codex, repaired the blade to how it was used by Ezio's father, and then played that little joke on Ezio both because it was funny, and also to obtain the "commitment" to the blade that he mentions. :)

ezio is the best assassin

That is truth beyond doubt

Ezio is still my favourite ACII was for me the best game in the series

No, Da Vinci said the blade had been modified since 1190 so that messing about with fingers wasn't necessary.

So...any of the answers posted here wont be correct for you.

The creators of the movie just wanted this in-maybe because it could remind people of Altair be an easter egg etc.

I wonder how many of these idiots died from gangrene. Lol.

Seriously, doing that kind of surgery in 1492 pretty much guaranteed sepsis. No antibiotics, ya know?

This movie is just so preposterous. It only works as a game, because outside the gameplay the story is ridiculous.

The last sentence is a major reason why Video Games movies bomb. The plotline works as a frame for the gameplay, but on it's own collapses. And that most game plots are just a rehash of genre clichés anyway does not help matters.
