Did Kurzel hurt the movie?

It seems the modern trend to hand tentpole movies to inexperienced directors - for me Kurzel's direction hurt the movie - particularly the muted colour palette, overuse of fog/smoke effects and incomprehensible action scenes. I liked 'Macbeth'- but he didn't seem to have a handle on how to create an engaging spectacle here.

I think what hurt it more is the fact that the studio hired a director like Kurzel but then didn't give him much freedom.

He was the director, the movie sucked, a lot of blame has to lie with him. Especially considering so many flaws are in the direction of the action sequences and the way the narrative is put together. The writers also tanked it as well.

Totally agree with you man.. I could see a damn thing because of all the smoke/fog. And the colour palette wad pretty annoying. Almost as if they wanted to repeat the matrix feel with an overuse of a certain colour.

But it just didn't work. And instead of going back into history it more felt like going back to a game or something..
