Will this be the end of Video Game Movies?

What was the last successful VG Movie?

Seems like it's all comic books nowadays.

The Angry Birds movie was a genuine hit and made a decent profit.

Considering Hollywood is out of ideas for original movie ideas I don't believe video game movies are dead per se, however once a game is chewed up and spit out at the theatre that will be the end of that series.

I'm still waiting for someone like Christopher Nolan to take on Bioshock. If that fails with a decent director and cast, then we can give it up.

Otherwise I advise video game producers to stop selling the rights to their games to Hollywood. Start selling them to HBO, Netlfix, make a TV show out of it. Selling the rights to those might not make as much money as selling them to HW, but on the long term, it's more beneficial. A great Assassin's Creed series would attract many new players to the game series. And it leaves a better impression. And isn't it also just a great feeling to have succeeded in something, do have done something good to the franchise? (I recognise that latter is a more naive argument)

For comic books, the only successful movies (in ratings) seem to come from Marvel (or at least most of them). They just have the hang of it, something video game movie makers still have to achieve.

And I agree with what has been said before: Hollywood isn't very creative nowadays. There are still some good ideas each year, even for blockbusters, but it gets more and more repetitive, many needless remakes, reboots, sequels and whatnot. Not all of those are bad, but many are.

Tl;dr: don't think they'll die out, but TV shows might a be more suitable medium. And Hollywood is running out of ideas.
