Loved it. A bit bleak but I liked that.

I'll admit to being a large fan of the games so perhaps that has clouded my judgement but none the less I enjoyed the film immensely. The real locations and commitment to the period were impressive. The film was bleak but rightly so.

I'm not a gamer. I loved the film.

I'm glad you liked it. What did you like?

reply

Me too. I'm a gamer so of course I loved it, but the two non-gamers I went to see it with genuinely loved it too! They enjoyed both the unique story and the "mesmerizing" action set-pieces.

Most people I've spoken to liked the film it seems

They needed to flesh out their characters more, make you care about them and show the apple's power which this film did not do. I see what they were going for but they needed to put in more effort, explain and show more on how the templars were evil. A fan of the games knows what to expect but this was to draw in new people as well, they should have fleshed this cast of characters out more and explain more as AC 1 did when EVERYONE was new to the series.

Show the apple of eden's powers, show how it will be a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands, or show how the assassin's could use it when an ally is in harm's way.

I can definitely agree that both the characters and the Apple need more fleshing out for non-fans. I wonder if any of the 30 or so minutes of cut footage addressed any of that.

Yup! I actually just saw it again, this time with another person who is much impress, and he actually walked out of the theater... well, impressed. Lol

Ugh, stupid phone. I meant to say "Much harder to impress"

I am not surprised, the film would confuse and be dumb to a new person, hell even a long time fan like me is saying that they needed to really trat this as "AC 1" in that they explain a lot to the new person, they were kinda going for that "AC 1" vibe but missed the parts where they delved into "reason you should care", "what is going on and why", and WHERE IS EAGLE VISION ?!

Oh yeah, Eagle Vision is interesting- several months ago (back when the film was still 140ish minutes), both Michael Fassbender and Justin Kurzel stated in separate interviews that Eagle Vision was one of the iconic things, like the Leap of Faith, that was definitely in the movie. And it ended up being cut from the theatrical release.

I really hope there's a director's cut for this film. I do feel like there's quite a bit of material that probably WAS filmed that shouldn't have been cut from the film.

reply

Why do I feel that the cut material was essential to making this film make more sense, fixed plot issues, and explained more about why people are doing what they are doing.

I am a big fan of the series, started back when AC:R was about to come out with AC 1 and been with the series ever since, started late but I still completed every main game. AC 1 was the easiest game for this movie to ape, different characters but same basic introduction to the universe, hell you could see that is what they were going for but somewhere along the way they got lazy or confused.

I can see the potential the film has but they wasted it by just not doing enough to make people care and did not even show the philosophy behind the whole assassin brotherhood.
