What was the significance behind the flying bird?

Were they just going for style, or is there something more to that?

Eagles, Hawks, and other birds are tied to the Assassins in the video games. Almost every protagonist from an AC game has their name tied to a bird somehow (Connor, Edward, Jacob, and Evie are the only exceptions I think and all of them have other bird related things). The movie keeps this tradition Aguilar means like Eagle and Callum means Dove.

Also, the games there's an eagle on every viewpoint. It also seemed like they were going for an Assassins's Creed III trailer type vibe where the swooping eagle sets up the shot (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-pUhraVG7Ow)

Nice explanation, couldn't have said it better myself!! :)

Also, Callum means Dove? I didn't know that, thats cool!

Thanks and yeah apparently it does https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callum I saw it mentioned somewhere else how the names Aguilar and Callum play off each other like Hawk and Dove, the symbols for War and Peace and are supposed to symbolize Callum's conflicted nature and the conflicted nature of the Assassins (they fight for peace and freedom but they're constantly at war).

Oh wow, that's really well thought-out. Loving all the symbolism! That conflicted nature of the Assassins has always been one of my favorite things about the franchise's story.

Yeah, Eagles are meant to be the mascot of the Assassin order, but you can definitely be forgiven for not realising that watching the film. I don't remember any other eagle symbolism ever being used..

I suspect the problem is that you have too many paperclips up your nose

This is again something they should have explained for new people, this film was ok but it did not try enough, it did not show why it was essential not to allow the apple of eden in the film to fall into the hands of the templars.

Had this film fleshed out the characters, motivations of both sides, who Abstergo was more, and made more effort to delve into the philosophy of each side more this probably would have been better.

They did say the creed and the motto of the series but they never show or explain why it is so important or matters, they needed to go into what each side really stands for as new people will not see the point of these two factions being in a "forever war".

They were trying but they did not try hard enough to show what "Assassin's Creed" is all about, they should have brought it back to basics like AC 1 where Desmond(the player) was the new guy and has no idea on what the hell is going on.
