I'm not sure if the movie is set in the same universe as the games.

For the games release order is the best so I'm assuming it's the same for the books, comics, etc. The movie is set in the same universe and it is set during October 2016 which places it after the last Assassin's Creed game released but I think you could fully appreciate the movie after playing just the first game to be honest.

- Assassin's Creed: Rogue

If it is your first time through the series I would 100% play through them in that order as the modern day story connects from game to game that way.
