movies based off video games will never be good because video games

don't have good stories? maybe that is the reason why? whenever I hear a video game having a great story, it's with respect to video games, not movies. outside of the video game, the story is tedious and nothing new. but in the video game world, the story is refreshing and amazing.

grand theft auto series for example, is basically a mob movie every time, yet those games are rated nearly perfect in the video game world and their story rating is high. not every mob movie is rated high though.

so the reason why we rarely have a good video game movie adaptation is because the story for a lot of video games just aren't that good?

I would say quite the opposite. Video video game stories are usually awesome and the fans fall in love with them. The problem is that when making the movie, do you do a completely different take on the story? Do you copy the story from the game verbatim? Do you tweak parts of the story to make it different in some portions?
Doing any of these things is bound to piss off somebody and in my opinion it really handcuffs a writer and director when making a movie about a video game. Another issue is that alot of films do not capture the feel and look of the game. Different music is used, the film doesn't set the atmosphere up properly, and characters are changed or totally altered.
I'll give you a hypothetical, I loved the game The Last of Us. If a movie was to be made about that game I would want to see the main characters from the game in it because those characters were awesome and amazing. I would also want to see the same plot because again I loved it. Any changes to these things would be under intense scrutiny from myself because it would tread away from that is already amazing in my opinion. On the other hand. Do I really want to see a complete rehash of The Last of Us story? I mean I have already played it and gone through it all, I know what is going to happen and have actually seen it all happen through almost the same media as a movie.
I guess in all video game movies will almost always be set up for failure because anyone who loves the game for what it is probably wont be happy no matter what you do with it.
