Maybe just didn't work because they're older and more pathetic
Doing these roles in their thirties made it seem kind of okay being idiots abroad; acting like retarded teenagers in your fifties/sixties is just sort of sad.
shareKind of. It's not so much that they were in their 50's acting like dumb teens, it's that they clearly lack the energy for it these days. Zany characters demand zany energy. That's what age does to a body after a point.
Had they done this exact same movie soon after the original movie, I think the results would be very different. They would have hit those jokes so much harder and with more zeal, and it would have been about as well received as the original. The jokes are there, but Carrey and Daniels just don't sell it like they did in the original.
