That was definitely not a punishment I would have wanted to do! I thought they were a little easy on him because he didn't really stick his hand in too far when he freaked out and ran off. Normally, they make sure the punishee fully performs the task he is assigned to, but they kind of let him off the hook.
Maybe the cowhands didn't want to inflict further trauma to the cow.
