I still think anything she did and does after Star Wars reeks of some kind of anti-Amidala desperation. Jackie Kennedy or western Jane are obviously such "complex and deep" nothing-to-do-with-Star Wars roles.
To "really prove" that she can act in something else besides a G. Lucas flick.
So that she's a "talented", "nuanced" and "versatile" actress. A diva who has a "range". Star Wars was the highlight of her career. It's all south from there. If she wants to prove her versatility, it would be better if she did some porn, a threesome with Master Yoda and Ewan McGregor. Imagine Darth Vader "hop in and out": "Oh, I love you, Ani, I love foursome so much ...!"

Take her flick Leon: The Professional where she was cast as Mathilda.
Either her or Jean Reno, although both ghastly overrated, are completely forgettable. Mathilda's love relationship with Leon in that movie is, mildly put, sick. It's a good thing at least Leon ends up dead before it becomes disturbing. Mathilda should be dead too. To have a name so dumb and stay alive until the end credits?
Seriously, now that's a plot error of galactic proportions, beyond any plausibility.
I think that movie, for instance, should be titled after Steinfeld, the legendary and best rogue cop on screen like ever, played by Gary Oldman.
He stole that show (F'ck you, Jean Reno!), remains IMHO only true star of that otherwise dumb film and deserves an Oscar solely for his onscreen presence. But he will never get one for that or anything else he does.
Mediocre actors like Natalie Portman - they get one by the time they're 35. Let's leave aside the fact that Black Swan is an insult to intelligence and a morbid waste of time or money. It's not a movie, but obviously another post-Amidala tragedy.

Natalie Portman was well known, before the Star Wars films, and I'm sure that fact, is the reason why she was cast in the first place. I personally don't believe, that Star Wars did anything for her career in a positive way. She has received a lot of criticism over the years, for her performance in those films, but no one gives a good performance, they are all totally forgettable. When you have good actors and actresses with talent, and a not so good director, the result are films like Star Wars, and they were a big disappointment for me. George Lucas is an exceptional filmmaker, but I would have to disagree with anyone, that says he is a good director
Most everyone agrees that Natalie's role as Mathilda, is her most noted accomplishment in film, despite her Oscar win for Black Swan, (myself included). I definitey disagree with your OP!!!
The fact you can't get over Star Wars makes me sad for you. In Portman's career Star Wars is a blip.
