Ellen page would be a perfect fit for ellie!

Although Ellen Page is like 27 years old, she still looks like a teenager and could be a really good fit for this role! Thats my opinion.

Maybe a few year back but maybe a little too old now I think anyway.
Maybe find a new child actor

doubt Ellen wants to play a 14 year old.

Why does Ellie have to be 14 in the film? TLOU may be a video game but it's effectivly a movie in its own right.

A screen adaptation shouldn't be a complete rehash of what PS gamers have played, it should take inspiration from it. Ellie could be a few years older under a different story, and Ellen Page is by far the best person to play her. Numerous out there could play Joel, Ellie not so much.

^^This. I kinda think Hugh Jackman would be a great Joel after seeing Prisoners. Ellen Page would be PERFECT for Ellie, it feels like it's Ellen Page is Ellie anyway.

I agree that TLOU is a film in its own right -- which is why I don't feel that it's at all necessary to adapt it for the screen -- but I have to disagree with you here.

First, I think Ellen Page is a great actor, so I've nothing against her. Ellie is fourteen in the game, and I can't see that they'd change her age for the film, outside of perhaps a year or two. Ellen Page certainly has a young face, but not that young. Also, I feel like a lot of people are quick to cast her as Ellie simply because they share a few facial similarities. This doesn't mean she's the one who's most suited to the role.

Second, I think it's quite unfair to say that Joel could be played by any number of actors in comparison to Ellie. If you're talking visually, again, I'm sure there are quite a few who are good matches -- I can think of quite a few, off the top of my head -- but that doesn't mean they'd give a quality performance. Truthfully, this is one of the bigger problems I have with adapting this game for the screen: Troy Baker is Joel for me, in the same way that Ashley Johnson is Ellie. I can't imagine anyone bringing those characters to life like they did.

Agreed. The similarities are striking (not just looks; but also personality-wise). It may well be that the creators had Page in mind when shaping Ellie and her character. (Not to mention the fact that they're both gay - interesting that Page came out after the game's release - not that there is a connection between the two, obviously, but I like the coincidence). And Page could still definitely play a teenager. Plus, they could make her slightly older in the adaptation (although I think Ellie's young age make Ellie's story and character all the more powerful). Anyway, I can't imagine anyone else in the role.

Actually, regarding the part of your post in spoiler blocks, it gets even weirder and more coincidental...

The actual game, 'The Last of Us' never revealed anything about Ellie's sexuality, or even hinted at her being gay. She wasn't revealed to be gay until the release of the DLC, 'Left Behind'. The DLC was released for the first time ever on February 14, 2014. That was effectively the day that the character Ellie was outed to the world. And by some crazy coincidence, February 14, 2014 is also the exact same day that Ellen Page came out publicly for the first time.

How nuts is that?

Also, no one has pointed out that Naughty Dog just happened to name the character Ellie, in addition to all the other similarities. Ellie is a less formal, and very common nickname for girls named Ellen.

The timing of the Left Behind thing was a crazy coincidence. At the time I really expected there to be an article about that, like it was a planned thing. But it's not like either Ellen Page or NaughtyDog would benefit from doing that on the same day so of course it's impossible.

Still, it was very odd.

Yeah DDP is a great choice

Nah she is too old, her voice is deeper then lets say when she was in xmen 3

So because Ellie looks like Ellen Page, she should get the part of Ellie? I disagree with that. Will be interesting to see who does eventually get cast for the part.

Of course it's not just because of the looks. I mean in general, because I mean that Ellen is a skillful actor. The similarities in their appearance is just a bonus.

reply

Personally i think it needs to be someone who has played the game and would know what to get out of Ellie and study how she is. I know there are a lot of celebs that are gamers :)

Definitely. Someone who appreciates the source material. But most actors worth their salt do some homework to prep for roles. I would hope the leads would become fans in the process if not already.

The resemblance between Ellie and Ellen Page is there, but it's superficial. When you really watch her in the cut scenes, she bears a much stronger similarity to Ashley Johnson - not just the voice, but the face and expressions as well. Basically, she's a younger Ashley Johnson with brown hair.

Of course, Ashley Johnson is 32 and probably couldn't pass for a 14 year old either. So the best option would be to find some talented teenage actress to take over the role.

reply

Too old as an adult for the role now. At one time, however, she would have been perfect if she were a teenager. I am voting for an unknown as Ellie.
