Why did Robyn bring camels on her journey? She never rode them and she had FOUR camels???? It's hard enough to survive the outback alone. Didn't she make it all the more difficult for her to have to take care of four camels and a dog while on her trip? Why bring them if she wasn't going to ride them and just do all the walking herself?
Robyn used the camels as pack animals, all of her water and provisions were carried by them - she couldn't have done the trek without the camels, and she spent two years learning how to train them and then acquiring the ones she brought with her. In the book she rides them only on rare occasions. The main reason she stated was that it was too rough on the butt. In the film they show Mr. Eddy briefly riding one, when he gets off he makes a pained expression and a motion that indicates it also made him sore. The dog, Diggity, went everywhere with her, they were friends, and as the film showed, she also was helpful.
Not sure if there was a logistical reason, but she was a sick animal sadist I'm afraid. she might have thought she cared about animals, but she didn't really, especially the dog.
Dromedary Camels are native to desert areas of Africa and Asia. They can live on thorny desert plants and thrive in the Australian Outback where many were released after they were replaced by motor vehicles.
