Adelaide Film Festival premiere

Tracks set for Adelaide Festival premiere

Tracks, the true story of Robyn Davidson’s 2,700 km trek across the outback with four camels and her dog Diggity, will have its Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival in October.

But audiences in other States will have to wait until March to see the adventure which stars Mia Wasikowska as Davidson and Adam Driver (HBO’s Girls) as Rick Smolan, the American National Geographic photographer who joined her on several occasions.

Distributor Transmission Films has dated the film for March 6 after deciding to avoid the cluttered pre-Christmas period and to spend more time on developing marketing materials for the campaign.

The November/December frame is crowded with titles such as August: Osage County, a dramedy that stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Abigail Breslin, Ewan McGregor, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, The Carrie remake, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, Disney’s Saving Mr Banks, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Ben Stiller’s adventure/comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Tracks was directed by John Curran (The Painted Veil, We Don’t Live Here Anymore, Praise) from a screenplay by Curran and Marion Nelson, adapted from Davidson’s book.

The producers are Emile Sherman and Iain Canning of See-Saw Films, co-produced by Julie Ryan (Red Dog, Ten Canoes).

The film may have its world premiere before the Adelaide festival if it’s selected for the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

I wonder if that March 6 release date applies to here in the US as well.

Thanks for the info - I've been wanting to hear the latest on "Tracks". Where did you get this from? I was hoping the film would be released in the U.S. this fall, but March isn't too bad.

Thank you for the update. I've been wondering when we would get news on this. Very much looking forward to it.

Here's the first (and very cool) image from the film that was released this morning.

Based on an iconic book, the film tells the true story of author Robyn Davidson's 1,700 mile trek from the middle of Australia to the Indian Ocean in the late 1970s.

Many fine actresses "came after" the role, Curran told ScreenDaily, but from the minute he met Mia Wasikowska he felt she had the ability to embody the complex and contradictory real-life character.

"There was something about her (Wasikowska's) spirit...She's very very smart and good at articulating ideas, which was remarkable to me at such a young age," he said. "She is in practically every frame of the film and was on set every day in that heat, often miles away for the wide shots, managing on her own with four camels and a dog."

Very nice. I'm really looking forward to this film. Where did you get the quote from John Curran about working with Mia on the film? Is that part of some longer article or interview? If you've read the book you can see that this is one challenging role - Robyn Davidson is NOT just some feelgood character, she has a lot of sharp edges, too.

"an international bestseller that filmmakers have been trying to translate to screen for a decade or more."

That line is a real underestimate, it's definitely "more", like a good 30 years.

. . . Okay, I found the article with John Curran talking about "Tracks". Thanks for the lead. This really wets my appetite.

It still blows my mind that Julia Roberts was once slated to play this part.
