If a movie can intertwine its social commentary with reasonable plot lines, defined characters, and either a tribute or a parody of the genre, then it might have something.
the movie reminded me of an old star trek episode where they beam down to a planet where the culture is stagnant and dull... but when the clock chimed midnight, they would go into festival mode and unleash the animal within.
Frankly, I liked The Purge. It sais a lot about ourselves and provokes thought and discussion.
