Could Marion be spared?

I know she dies in Psycho, but this is an alternative continuity. Is it possible they will play around with our expectations at seeing her murder, only to end up sparing her?

In Hannibal Freddie Lounds wasn't killed off.

I think she better be killed, the character only really matters because of her death, they can't just reintroduce the character and not kill her off similarly to the way she died in the movie in my opinion.

Absolutely Marion could survive, even if it is an alternative continuity it can still match up to the film and this is just Marion visiting the town. You have to remember that in the film the Sheriff when talking to Lila and Sam said after his Mother's death Norman lived like a hermit (corrected by his wife as recluse).

This could be when Marion first meets Sam, he and his wife (Madeleine) could be on a trial separation and Sam forms a bond with Marion. If Norman was a recluse as said in the film, then it is absolutely feasible that Marion came to town and he never met her. Remember in the film also that Marion got confused driving in the rain and ended up where she did. Marion even says to Norman that she thought she got off the main road and Norman tells her they moved the highway, that could also suggest that Marion had been there before (prior to the by-pass being completed).

So yeah in it's own continuity Marion could survive and by the lore set down by both the book and film Marion could survive. Even in an alternate world some things can remain the same in the future, just because they lead up to it differently doesn't mean they can't have the same end result.

Why should she be spared? Her death is crucial just as normas death was crucial. Im happy they are doing something different but her surviving makes zero sense. Plus the shower scene supposedly happens in the episode nestor directs. People want dylan to survive, emma to survive, romero and now Marion. If everyone survives it would be a letdown.

Marion dying is crucial to the movie we all know, however not crucial to the story of a young Norman or to the Marion we meet at the start of the film. Yes I have a feeling that Marion will die based on what has been said, however will not be disappointed if it ends up being say Madeleine Loomis (who looks a lot like a young Norma in this), in that shower scene instead.

A backstory of Marion meeting Sam that leads up to the story of the movie and why she took the money to try and help Sam out could still be part of this story. Just as Norman having been a recluse for the past 2 years since we last saw him, could be part of the reason that he ended up in a Mental Institution as he did in the book and film prior to killing Marion.

I am not writing anything off until I see this season, I am not setting myself up for disappointment because I can see other scenarios that still fit to the book and film.

The question was could Marion survive and I gave my reasons as to why if they wanted to keep her alive I see no reason why they couldn't, plus this from the creators still sits heavy in the back of my mind:

Executive producer Carlton Cuse mentioned that Marion's visit "will be a big moment" and she'll be in multiple episodes. But it won't be quite what happened when she was in the classic Alfred Hitchcock film.

"We wanted [our fifth and] final season to allow us to do our version of the Psycho lore, but it would be boring to just recreate Psycho," Cuse said.

The showrunner has also stated they will incorporate some events from the original films, but it would be, "simply boring to just recreate Psycho." With that being said, co-creator Kerry Ehrin also revealed:

"The episodes that she’s (Rihanna) in were very much designed to be like a collision between Psycho and Bates Motel, and, really, it’s the first and only time we’ve ever truly stepped into Psycho."

A collision between Psycho and Bates Motel could mean any number of things, so I'm keeping my mind open to the thought that any scenario is possible, making it end like the movie or leading to the events movie.

Judging from reports of the filming I'm pretty confident she will die. I just don't see the advantage of having her, emma, and Dylan and possibly romero all surviving. That would be kind of a 'Hollywood happy ending" I think Dylan and Emma are for sure surviving from what I have read

I agree, JCrusher.
I take the producers' "it won't be quite what happened when she was in the classic Alfred Hitchcock film" to mean that the story will unfold differently. That doesn't mean the end result won't be the same.
Norman cannot suddenly turn merciful. Without his medication, Mother took over (or takes over when she senses a threat), and she is merciless.

reply

Well, you may be right. Perhaps she doesn't die and Madeleine does instead.

SPOILERS FOR THE LATEST EP!!

Maybe the foreshadowing occurred with Madeleine when she handed shower curtains to Norman in this latest episode.

reply

I agree, she has to go.

I can totally see them saving the TV Marion. I think the show needs proper closure, so that would mean Norman gets put away a lot earlier than the timeline of the 1960 film. We may even have a situation where Romero saves Marion from Norman. And dare I say it, Norman might actually die in the series finale.

reply

I think it would be a pretty big let down if she were to survive. People have been talking about how her death will be portrayed in the show since before it even aired. There's other characters that they could have survive the series but Marion isn't one of them...unless the series ends in the moments leading up to her death.

reply

Personally, I want her character to come and go, so that pretty much means death. I do not want to see Rihanna try to act out this classic character for more than 1 episode. Just get this circus sideshow casting out of the way so I can enjoy the rest of the series.

Oh for damn sure! So well said.

Yea maybe it will be because it's that stupid Rihanna.

reply

Well, they completely killed my interest in the show with their choice of whom to cast for Marion, so...NO.

Signatures are stupid...🙍

reply

I believe she's sent to work undercover by Romero, and that she will be the iconic character to actually take out Norman in the television version of Psycho. There's gotta be a bigger reason as to why they cast Rihanna other than simple stunt-casting.

Her role in the series will be iconic due to the fact a female of color takes out the fragile, white psychopath rather than falling prey. It fits with the whole feminism narrative.

Gawd, I hope she dies!
