Fun coming-of-age comedy for Gen Xers

I saw the trailer for this movie and thought it was just another silly teen movie with a few laughs and bad acting. The only catch was it was set in 1991 when I was still in high school. So I thought I'd try a few minutes and see if it would rock the nostalgia feels.

Set in Nebraska of all places (though it doesn't really matter), it is about two entrepreneurial 14-year-olds about to start their summer. They come upon a snack shack at a popular community pool and decide to make their fortune selling to all the kids there.

There's your basic premise. There is more under the surface that slowly bubbles until a fairly dramatic third act. The cast is a blast, especially the two lead actors who play well off each other. The girl in the middle as the dangerous flirt they can't figure out hit too close to home - she was exactly like the girl that got between me and my buddy around this same time. Maybe that's why I couldn't stand her.

It has a lot of laughs but switches gears towards the end and it wraps up with a few poignant scenes about friendship and heartbreak. It's worth a rental if you're into coming-of-age flicks.
