I have just started the series...a little weird?

Having watched and loved The Paradise, I thought I would try this series. I have just watched the first episode. It is a little odd, isn't it? I mean, close your eyes and just listen to the audio...Mr. Selfridge sounds just like Ryan Reynolds! Ha ha.
Honestly though, did they make him seem far too modern in an attempt to portray that he is forward-thinking and American? He speaks in a way that pulls me out of the story.

He was too much to take in. Of course it shows how he was just putting on a happy face in public and once he was behind closed doors we are able to see he is keeping up apperances. He reminded me a bit of Mr.Rourke (sp) from the old tv show Fantasy Island mixed w/ Willy Wonka. But all his energy was making me dizzy and out of breath as if I was following him around.
