Previous films required viewing?

If I watched this film without prior knowledge of the events of the previous films, will this film go over my head? I understand this is the last part of a trilogy, but some trilogies don't require prior viewings of the previous films. Just curious if this is one of those cases. Thanks in advance!

Yes
This is a very confusing movie

To understand it the best, you should watch the first ten minutes of the final fifteen minutes of the third part of the trilogy first, and after that put in the first hobbit movie and write across the bottom of your TV screen with a marker "Six months earlier". Keep watching Hobbit #1, Hobbit #2 and Hobbit #3 up until you get to the point that you watched first. Fast forward through those already watched ten minutes and watch the final five minutes of the trilogy. Every show and movie should follow that format.

I actually just finished up The Hobbit trilogy a short time ago and I do think it would be better to watch the first two films first then this.

In my view, and I'm probably in the minority on this but even though this trilogy is a little more kid friendly than LOTR films, I think I liked The Hobbit trilogy more than the LOTR trilogy. Bilbo is just a better character than Frodo and I think these films played out a little better than the LOTR movies. And it can't be denied, the forest scene in The Desolation of Smaug was some really great film-making. It might be my favorite scene in the entire set of films. It's such a hypnotic scene. I really liked it a lot.

I would probably consider these movies to be the ultimate fantasy films. It's got everything you would expect in this type of movie. I gotta give The Hobbit trilogy a very solid 8.4 out of 10.

That being said, watch them all. They're very good movies.
