How come she's a news reporter?

Lana is identified in the graphic novel as Managing Editor of the Daily Planet. Apparently Frank Miller wanted to use her in the story and decided this was the best way to do so.
"You seem familiar with my name, but I don't remember smelling you before."
Jimmy Olsen is also shown on the news at one point but I forget what he was doing.
I like how Miller was realistic with the aging process, like Lana Lang and Selina Kyle not aging gracefully.
