I believe that NetFlix, at least, has an agreement with Warners for a 70 (90?) day waiting period before a new release is available to rent.

I just checked. Redbox has Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2.

Not always true that's only for select titles netflix had the dark knight returns part 1 when it first hit stores and has had part 2 since it first came out.
