The Shining

Is it me, or does The Babadook share a certain space with The Shining? A parent losing control and a child living in fear.

Yes, The Babadook brought both The Shining and The Exorcist to mind as they all turn on placing children in peril. Which is something I find deeply disturbing.

At first I thought Samuel would be the gateway for the Babadook. His extreme and emotionally taxing behavior was reminiscent of Regan from The Exorcist. As the movie progresses Samuel's behavior grinds his mother down to a breaking point and she emotionally and physically abuses her son, like Jack Torrance did to his son Danny in The Shining. A significant difference from both those movies is that the child is able to protect himself and his parent and nobody, at least no person, dies despite the presence of a most evil apparition.

Be seeing you...
