Loved it. Similar movies?

Similar movies I've seen are The Proposition and Animal Kingdom. Thanks

A Boy and His Dog (1975)

Agree. A Boy and His Dog and The Rover would make a great double feature.

The tone of A Boy and His Dog is totally different from The Rover. ABaHD is much more upbeat and satirical. It is permeated by a dark twisted sense of humor. The Rover is far, far bleaker and hopeless. The only linking thread is that the protagonists of each film live in a post-apocalyptic desert and have dogs.

There was no dog in Mad Max. You're thinking of the sequel, The Road Warrior, aka Mad Max 2. I would put the first Mad Max at the top of the list for similar films to The Rover, but the action packed, comic book sequel, not so much.

Upbeat? Even with its humour, ABAHD is pretty bleak. In addition to the setting, there is a comparison in issues of self preservation and the value of human life. Of course they are not the same, compare and contrast. Still a good double bill, IMHO.

Have you seen Blue Ruin yet? It doesn't take place in a post apocalyptic society, nor does it take place in Australia, but I got a similar vibe while watching The Rover.

my first thought as well. blue ruin is terrific

Watched Blue Ruin a couple weeks after this, also loved it!

Another Blue Ruin fan 😊 I liked Blue Ruin more, actually

Apocalypse-related:
Le temps du loup (2003).
It's conceivable that Cormac McCarthy saw this before he wrote The Road.
I kind of liked Carriers (2009), Stake Land (2010)and Hell (2011), too. Oh, and Take Shelter (2011), of course.

Crime-related:
Hail (2011) packs quite a punch.
As an intro, you could watch the devastating short 'Cicada' by the same director.

I loved The Rover, felt it was one of the best movies I've seen in ages. In a way Walkabout had a similar bleak tone and view of the outback for me, also agree with the other poster - Wake In Fright.

Also The Hitcher felt similar in bleak tone. Although all of these movies share no similarity in story but are all classics for me.

Ok thanks. LOVE The Hitched, one of.my favorite horror films

The Road is basically a movie with the same theme. It's a lot darker in ethical terms though.

reply

While not post-apocalyptic like this movie, Mystery Road 2013 shares the same setting (Australia) and is similarly bleak.

Thank you, I'll give it a shot

I'd like to see a movie like this except the protagonist is Justin Beebler as a caped crusader taking out the baddies with the power of hip hop.
