Core Issue Never Resolved or Fully Confronted?

The main character, Monk, feels like black novelists are either pandering to the general public at the expense of their own people or not giving readers enough credit by churning out derivative unoriginal stories.

At first it seems clear we should be behind him, then we flirt with some interesting counterpoints such as: there is nothing wrong with mindless entertainment once in a while, and there is a difference between showing things as they are and "blaxploitation"/pandering.

However when these ideas climaxed as a "heated" debate between Monk and Sintara, I felt the Issa Ray character's argument fell flat. She was privileged so what she was doing still felt opportunistic and disingenuous. This was a bit of a letdown for me as I was gearing up for a more even sided exchange of ideas which made both characters reconsider their point of views.

I agree it could have gotten a stronger footing at some point.

I think that it gave us just enough insight. I don't remember the exchange exactly, but I believe she tells him that there is nothing wrong with giving the audience what they want, but that her work did require a lot of research and that it was based on real conversations she'd had and has real life footing.
