Can Daniel Craig really quit if...

....he's signed to 5 films and has only made 4?

The stories are conflicting on his contract status.

If he is contracted to make 5, there may be a financial penalty inflicted on him, but he couldn't be forced to make a fifth film.

My theory is that he was signed for two more after Skyfall, but something that happened with Sony ended up releasing him from that contract. Now EON wants him to do more than just one more film if he re-signs.

A similar thing happened with Dalton. He was under contract for another film after Licence to Kill. The legal issues at the time ended up releasing him from his contract. When EON wanted to renegotiate, they wanted a three picture deal, but Dalton only wanted to do one more.

It's all very simple. Craig has had enough. He's said that it's physically taxing to make these films and he has no more satisfaction from making them other than making bank. He didn't want to do 2 back to back films, so why would he change his mind after such a short amount of time? Plus, if they can't put a proper team together, damn right they shouldn't rush to get the ball rolling on the next film. They need new writers, a new director, and a new lead...not to mention a good story that's actually written.

Bottom line is, we won't see Bond's return for quite a while...

We'll see.

I have hopes for Craigs return. I can understand that he's physically exhausted after making these movies because of how much he puts into it. I still beleive they can get one more out of him. I think they will. No reason to remain undecided if he wasn't thinking of doing another one.

I remember after the success and excitement of Casino Royale they signed him for another four films which leaves one more to be made and I believe they paid him upfront as well. I'll look for a source.

The bottom line is that they're not going to force him to make another film if he doesn't want to, it would be a miserable production and he'd probably phone it in. If he truly doesn't want to come back he won't.

Michael G Wilson himself said there is no contract obligating Craig's return.

For some reason I thought I heard he had signed on for an additional five movies after SKYFALL, and the studio was hoping to produce one every two years. But as awesome as it would be, a new Bond every two years seems too unlikely in these modern times. And I figured Daniel Craig will tire of the role.

I'm most likely wrong, but I wouldn't have believed it even if it had been true.
