Straight out of a poor rural area in Mexico.

The Book of Life is waaaay too colorful, it's a caricature of Mexican culture, and I know it's supposed to look/feel like that but that style is not my cup of tea. I like Pixar's approach better, but we'll see.

PD: In Corpse Bride the main character also travels to the land of the dead. It's not like a super original concept, anyway.

It should be noted that the director of the book of life pitched his idea to Pixar and they turned it down, and now their doing a film with the same preemies and style. But the real kicker is that it's going to make more money simply because Pixar has its name attached to it.

No, he didn't. He pitched the idea to DreamWorks.

Pixar is going to make more money than Book of Life because Coco is a better film PERIOD.

No, this is just another movie about Día de Muertos. Like with Christmas movies.

Though Día de los Muertos movies in the US aren't really as common as you may think, let alone as commercialized. This is also why the Mexican community initially refused to let Disney/Pixar trademark the title of the movie as such.

Yeah, they're very different films centered around the same holiday.

Of course there's a certain visual similarity as they're both inspired by the same folk art tradition, but the same could be said of any two Christmas movies.

I liked The Book of Life. But Coco seems almost entirely different from its premise asides the singing, guitar playing, the music ban, Mexican culture, and the Día de Muertos setting.

So, both films include:

Top-level professional animation
Boys from Mexico who want to play guitar, whose families don't want them to
And they travel to the colorful Land of the Dead, on the Day of the Dead
Bit comedic roles by Gabriel Iglesias and Cheech Marin
Lots and lots of cameos by Hispanic celebrities

But people who have actually seen both movies readily point out they are very different:
