Will there be a season 4?

I really love "Shetland", with it's calm storytelling, sometimes it reminds me about Swedish crime-series, but better, and with beautiful sceneries, that reminds a lot of the Swedish west coast along Bohuslän.

I also love the English dialect (or is it Scottish? - sorry for my lack of knowledge!)
Not a surprise that it's a (superior) BBC production, in this case BBC Scotland

My TiVo is recording the last episode (S3 E6) as I'm typing, even if there is no advertising in the Swedish public channels (SVT)

Well,,, to the Question; Does someone know if there will be a Season 4 as well?

How do you get episode 6 ? Do you mean 5 ?

Shetland was colonised and administered by Norway for a long time. So the Scandinavian feel is no accident.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shetland#Scandinavian_colonisation

Have you read the books ? They are by Ann Cleeves. A little different in characters but still good.

reply

No you don't mean 5 ! Sweden got the final episode early. Still Scandinavian influence in Shetland it seems :-)

reply

A little bit strange that we could watch it sooner, as E6
Episode 6 airs 4 March 2016 according to IMDb

Sorry to say that I haven't read the books, but I have seen them :-)

It's on SVT Play where it says "Säsong 3 - Avsnitt 6" = S3 E6

Apparently there is a rugby match in the UK delaying the final episode by two weeks.

Thanks very much for the link. It seems to know I am in Australia though. Even with software that is supposed to make me Swedish. But I solved it in another way!

The following post contains spoilers to some extent. Do NOT read if you
don't want to know some of the things that happens in the season finale.

spoilers ahead!

Do you think Tosh will go ahead with her plans to be transferred somewhere else
or do you think she'll change her mind and stays at Shetland?

Then what about Archie Panjabi as Asha Israni? She and Jimmy seems to have
grown quite attached to each other. I hope she stays.

Jimmy's daughter left for Brazil, so she probably won't be back either
unless her relationship breaks down.

Sarah Vickers will hardly be back due what happened/was revealed in in the finale.
Too bad, she's been a favourite of mine since I first saw her in Endeavour.

I think they just left Series 3 open-ended to see if a 4th series will be made. It's a great series despite some loose ends. If there were to be a 4th series, I'd like to see Arthur McCall return and brought down by Jimmy. And as for Cassie's boyfriend, I always get the feeling that he's working for McCall ever since he showed up.

finishing a marathon, started and cant stop watching it. It´s similar and as good as hinterland. hope there´s a 4th...

As much as I wish this is true, I am afraid it looks suspicious. It's the only source that I can find which confirms the renewal. Never a good sign.

I know, maybe I spoke too soon, but I thought it was a bit suspicious too. I've also checked BBC and they don't say a thing, which as you say is not a good sign. But the site seemed solid, that's why I thought it was okay to post it.

Anyway, I've emailed the BBC Audience Services and got the usual automated confirmation with regards from the BBC Enquires Team, and I hope they will come up with something. I guess we just have to wait for the reply to get the correct information. I certainly hope for the best :)

I'm impressed, that didn't take long, about 2 hours. I rarely email things like this, it tends to get lost somewhere in cyberspace. But the response from BBC starts and ends on a very personal and friendly manner and was a true pleasure to read.

Unfortunately (in this case), you're right, there are no updates on Shetland. I will of course delete my previous post with the misinformation, and thank you odd, for putting me on the right track. Damn, it made me so glad...  Still, keeping my fingers crossed...

This is the information I got from the BBC, and links for those who want updates, and sign up for BBC's newsletter;

With regards to a 4th series there has been no announcement yet but we always officially announce commissions (new programmes) and recommissions (returning programmes) first on our BBC Media website, so you should check this for updates now and again –

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/

Although, having double checked this for you today, there isn't any update at the moment for a 4th series of 'Shetland'. The last announcement pertains to series 3, it’s certainly unusual to see other media announcing a BBC show's return and BBC Media not having any release about the same...

Also, although I’m not sure if you can sign up for this outwith the UK, there is a BBC Media Newsletter available at this link –

http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/newsletter

You might as well check this out. If you can sign up, all BBC programme news will be delivered to your inbox directly...

Hi!! I had the same question! Thanks for the info about season 4!!! Really great news! I´m from Portugal and season 3 is on TV right now.

This is just another great BBC prodution! Wish I was in Shetland right now and not over here with all this sun and heat (I am NOT kidding!) And I found Douglas Henshall and his previous work. He is such a great actor!

Hallelujeh for all thost who stayed on the case for Series 4 and kept us updated.

Just wandered over here for an update, now that our other dour drama "Hinterland" is just about to conclude--because I began thinking that "Shetland" often comes round early in the year.

Though at the finale last year, I was very down about the apparent finality with which our Tosh truly appeared to be moving on. It didn't have the feel of an open ended story for her. She was quite damaged and in need of a fresh start, so it truly felt we'd lose her.

However, fingers crossed we have not. Her character is more than half the reason I watch...she's had some very droll and funny moments--especially in the beginning over her disappointing boy friend.

Seem to recall one scene that always makes me laugh...she was looking around the indoors of a run down cottage with Jimmy, surveying the rather depressing male domain and said drily, "You'd think he could put a wee doily or two around..."

Love Tosh!

reply

She has a great sense of humor. I dont have a clue about next season but I hope that she doesnt leave.

My fav scene is a dialogue with Jimmy when she said that it was weired if she fancied him (because he is older) ahhh!

reply

What I find very thought provoking is that, even though I can find no actual BBC confirmation of a 4th series, there is indeed a 2017 series with one non-descript episode listed on the IMDB page for this show.

And I do hope Tosh comes back.
Cheers!!

Shetland is also set to return for a fourth series, continuing BBC Scotland’s commitment to producing home-grown drama.

The series, inspired by Ann Cleeves’ crime novels of the same name, will return with 6x60’ episodes written by series one showrunner David Kane and produced by ITV Studios through BBC Scotland for BBC One. Douglas Henshall will return as DI Jimmy Perez, with other regular cast also returning.

Shetland will be Executive Produced by Gaynor Holmes for BBC Scotland and Kate Bartlett for ITV Studios. Filming will start early next year.

reply

Excellent! And, I thank you!

Great news, but to be expected when Shetland did so well at the Scottish BAFTAs. So pleased for Doug Henshall, not before time!

reply

Agee completely!! Series 3 was Shetland's finest and he absolutely deserved the Scottish BAFTA.

reply

I was hoping to see Alison O'Donnell's name mentioned. Would love to see her character again.

Glad to hear it. I have really enjoyed the series and was hoping it would be returning. Sounds like we won't be seeing it until the end of 2017 though. I was hoping it would be spring or summer at the latest.
