Sorry but I need to vent! Another skipped ep due to sport?

So, made a mental note to enjoy the grand finale of "Shetland" tonight and what did we find? (Was really looking forward to it!)

However, we now have a SECOND sport interruption from the BBC One? No Shetland tonight.

This fine series has now been put on hold for two weeks--twice--for a sport event on Friday night.

We all KNOW that Friday and Saturday nights on BBC One are often the traditional place for sport and reality tv.

So what in the H were the BBC programmers thinking by putting on a highly rated drama on a Friday night?

Sorry, but it's a bit odd the things that get up one's nose. But this has me fuming, in the tv-world sense.

The BBC have totally lost the plot. LITERALLY.

reply

I totally agree, how do they expect people follow the plot.they are a joke.

reply

Yup, that's why I used "literally" after, ha.

There is "losing the plot" in the slang sense. But in this case the BBC actually managed to do it...for real? :-))))

reply

Another point, having realised the one week break I set my Sky planner to record the final episode for next Friday and for anyone else doing the same please be wary of pressing the info button on your remote (which should give spoiler-free info) but reveals an albeit minor plot point which you may rather wait to find out.

"Stop listening to music made by poofs - Stick on some Elton John".

All about $$$, BBC and the rubbish wankers in charge of programming are going to kill a good series because the common thought of airing this on a Sunday evening is too complex..called BBC and gave them my tounge, bunch of elite wankers there...

Yes! And it goes back to putting a star series on a Friday--which everybody knows is the worst night to try to air a series.

Though, ITV managed it with "Mr. Selfridge" without having to take breaks throughout the airing.

Isn't there a new head of drama in the past few months for BBC?

Maybe she'll have the clout to stop programming nonsense like this. Hopefully, this was a one-off...

They easily could have waited until "Call the Midwife" was finished, etc. Or even "Happy Valley."

Who knows what goes on in the latte-addled minds of the increasingly irrational denizens of W1A. Too many extortionate expense account lunches at The Langham, no doubt...

Now that Jeremy has left the building they need to focus their idiot genes on other targets. And who is paying for lunch now that TG isn't raking in half their budget?

Hey OP, maybe there's no internet where you live?! Shame you can't watch catch up after an hour or two eh.

Sad times.

reply

It's not actually about catching up with a missed series episode...

It was about how the BBC pre-empted "Shetland" twice during its 6-episode run, extending over 8 weeks--in order to show a sporting event in its place. Twice.

So, after 8 weeks, we'll finally see episode 6 on Friday...

I really hate it when people do what I am about to do now and get all pedantic.

It's really 7 weeks since we saw episode 1 so from ep.01 to ep.06 with two weeks for stupid rugby it will be a 7 week span. Still stupid as it should have been a 5 week span.

I need a shower, I hate myself for doing that. dirty...dirty.

No worries, at all. If a mistake is made...feel free!

I had newspaper editors so smart it made my head explode correcting my mistakes in content and/or grammar for almost 30 years. So, it's second nature to have somebody say, "HANG ON!"

It's the BBC.. interupting a program to put on "European Tiddlywinks Final" then banning "Tiddlywinks" because there aren't enough women in the final is par for the course

Lol

Completely agree. I love this show, the scenery,Dougie Henshall, in fact anything to do with Scotland and I am there. So I tuned in to what I knew would be a cracking drama. Was it the fourth week Shetland was postponed for the footie? Never mind the storyline is excellent and we are getting to the conclusion, then the penultimate episode postponed AGAIN for the footie. Phooey. When we finally got to see the finale I had lost interest and had trouble working out who was who and who had done what!! Shame on you BBC, THIS WAS EXTREMELY BAD PROGFRAMMING. You spoilt a very good show.

reply

Too true.

I actually took the time to watch episode 5 again right before episode 6, just to refresh after two weeks. (Okay the memory isn't what it used to be...) :-)

Given the very last episode ever of "Shetland" vibe it made me wonder if the BBC knew it would be the end when they scheduled it, so didn't care if they lost ratings as it went on with the unfortunate dual interruptions for sport?

Given the heavy focus on ratings used by the network suits in order to decide on a renewal, maybe this time it just didn't matter if it was not going to be renewed anyway?

I can't get into the minds of distributors and bean counters at the Beeb, but maybe they just didn't care--IF it was the end of "Shetland."

They've got 4 series in the bag now, and it will make a tasty DVD marketing package. Maybe that's all they were going for.

It seems more and more and more actual airing of shows just doesn't matter much to the networks, even when ratings DO still matter, even on the Beeb with no adverts to sell.

I noticed this "live airings no longer much matter" when U.S. networks started throwing up new series as taster samples only to pull them after 2 or 3 poor ratings airings and getting them right up and running on their pay-to-view online network sites to rake in the cash (CBS and ABC and NBC I'm lookin' at you.)

Oh well, guess I'm still trying to find some twisted logic why the BBC would make such a beautiful, expensive and well done popular series and then just crap it away on a Friday night with two sports breaks.

Sports always, always wins. Just say Heidi to any dedicated (US) football sports nut and they will give you chapter and verse on a Very Important Game which was down to the last seconds of play and the Network cut the game and went to the movie "Heidi." They still have not lived this down. And ever since then sports wins. And look at the audience dynamics. Beer-drinking testosterone sports watching males vs tea drinking out of china cups women. Who do you think wins?
