We weren't at war with "civilians". We were fighting Sadam Hussein, a proven ruthless dictator, and later on with islamic extremists and jihadists who wouldn't think twice in cutting your head off and that of anybody else just 'cause. Easy to criticize from the comfort of your own home never having set foot in Iraq.

Sorry OP, but there are many stories of the Iraq war where Americans acted heroically and saved lives. Judging by how Iraq has been since the US withdrawal in 2011, you would have to be insane to not give credit to the American troops for keeping that country together during the American presence there. Americans definitely were protecting civilians from 03-11.
