Surprising comment from Sarah Treem

One thing I've realized after breaking this season is that we really are writing a love story. #TheAffair

Whose love story? That's my question.

As far as I can tell, none of these couples seem right...or work at all.

Maybe with loads of therapy?

Perhaps she's talking about Season 3? Otherwise it's more like a falling out of love story.

Oddly, one of my favorite season 2 episodes has that extended scene of Noah in couples therapy talking about his plans and his real feelings. He's not a lovable guy, but he's basically decent. I'm waiting for the series to be revealed as being a novel by Noah Solloway. The threads of Great Gatsby reference are clue.

This is very interesting and could definitely be how it ends. I love it!

There's obviously deep feelings between Noah and Alison, but Noah and Helen won't ever stop caring about each other, an the same goes for Alison and Cole. They are all bound together, and it's impossible to say who should end up with whom. I really want to know where all these relationships are going.

The interesting thing is how the affair has given these people the chance to liberate themselves from the things that were holding them back and helped them move forward. Noah got free of a life he didn't really want, Alison got over her grief, Helen freed herself from her mother's influence, and Cole got free from the destructive family ties.

So in destruction lies a chance for growth, but there's also chaos that comes with it.

Maybe she's talking about love in general, because there is a lot of love between the characters, even though it's shadowed by their complicated personalities and history.

That is some great insight right there.

Society has a seriously messed up idea of "love" and this show illustrates that. Most of these characters are too self-centered to be able to love authentically. They're mostly just playing at it...their love blossoms and dies depending on their needs at any given moment. They may be experiencing attachment, yes, but love? It's debatable.

Perhaps you're right, though. Perhaps they each need to learn to love and care for themselves by ridding themselves of harmful influences and past baggage before being able to really love someone else fully.

I hope we see that develop, I hope that's what Sarah's hinting at, because so far, I have no desire to see any of them reconcile. I'd like to see Allison and Noah learn from their mistakes and finally go into relationships where they give the other person as much as they've taken in the past. Or, in the case of Helen and Cole, where they realize they deserve better.

I don't know anything with certainty, but seeing the stars makes me dream.

The way I read some of the scenes I'd say they do have moments where they feel genuine love, but yeah, they seem to only realize it in certain moments and 'forget' about it in others. I do believe there's genuine love between Noah and Helen, I just don't know if it's the romantic kind or if it's just developed into something else. But two people, who've gone through so much together, who know each other that well and still feel fondly towards each other (in the moments when they manage to put all issues aside), I'd call that love. The same goes for Alison and Cole.

That's souls that are forever bound to one another by what they have lived through together. That doesn't mean that it would be best if they stay together forever, because they obviously needed something else to move forward as individuals, but there will always be a deep connection.

I hope we see that develop, I hope that's what Sarah's hinting at, because so far, I have no desire to see any of them reconcile. I'm not so sure. What have Alison and Noah taken? The real mistake on Noah's side imo wasn't to start the affair but to live a life that he didn't really want for 20 years or something. Of course he probably didn't completely realize that he wanted something else, so it's unfair to hold that against him. But it shows that he was too passive, he let their life be shaped by Helen and her parents and went along with everything, only complaining now and then. So fate gave him a destructive way of finding himself and realizing that he needed something different.

What should he have done instead? Apparently he needed to fall in love with someone else to get where he needed to be. Yeah, he acted like a complete *beep* a lot of times, and some of it was downright cruel. But he didn't mean to be, neither did Alison. They just acted according to their (very strong) emotions.

Again, I believe they are all at better places now, after Noah and Alison got involved. Alison would have never gotten Cole to let go of the ranch and become independend of his family even though she was clearly dying in that environment. It's unlikely that they would have found happiness. The same goes for Helen and Noah. Her parents' money was poisoning their lives, he was clearly sacrificing his principles. Noah probably wouldn't have been able to write another book, so they'd never have become independent from Helen's parents, and their marriage would have suffered.

The way I see it they are all responsible for where they are right now, and it's not too bad.

I get your points but it almost sounds like justification for affairs. I'll never agree with that. Realizing you are unhappy or not fulfilled is one thing but affairs can be devastating for a wide circle of people.

I watched s2 ep3 last night and cried when Cole asked Alison if shes ever coming home. He just never gave up hope it was very real and very sad.

I think Sarah must have written that tweet after completing a series of The Bachelor. There is no "love" in this sh*tfest. It's multiple people lusting to be the worst of the others.

LOL. Did she say why it's airing in November??? Now Shameless starting next month I hear. I don't like these changes.

reply

I don't like it either.

Noah & Helen will settle for each other but once again fall in love.
