Canticle episode, January 15, 2017

That's more like it! Last night's episode was more in the tradition of the original Morse series. And I suppose it was to be expected that the culprit was the person one would least expect it to be.

The final shot in each of the first two episodes is interesting - a Tarot card being revealed that perhaps hints at what will happen to Endeavour in the next episode?

Yes I enjoyed it too as always although I felt the inevitably unflattering characterisation of Mary Whitehouse clone Joy Pettybon was occasionally excessive. This of course was done to ensure the audience didn't sympathise with her - especially after her psuedo 'brownshirts' viciously beat up the heckler after her TV interview of which was a little implausible to put it mildly!

And because of said unflattering portrayal I guessed pretty much instantly that the death threats she received had been fabricated, especially with the aforementioned heckler (who was presumed responsible) portrayed so sympathetically.

Other than that it was the usual high standard and I get the impression that those of us who watched Endeavour are a great deal happier right now than those who watched Sherlock on the other side! 

I still enjoy watching Endeavour, but after a bit of binge watching of old Inspector Morse's episodes, can't help the feeling that there's something amiss. The culprits feel too random to me, too incidental to the plot line. Of course we are given psychological background that sounds solid, but is kind of not interesting, just something that will logically fit, added as a supplement, rather that something that is built on tiny, both character and plot, clues (hopefully made to be read completely the wrong way until the very end). It other words, Endeavour is beautifully crafted on many levels and it's pleasant to watch, but I miss this kind of psychological 'tightness' and 'weight', that could make it breathtaking.
Also, not much of character development so far, not much happening between series regulars, just some usual stuff of Bright making things difficult for Morse, some 'good advice' from Thursday after Morse gets in the usual trouble, WPC Trewlove continuously displaying new unexpected talents and that's it. Strange is just a background. Where is DS Jakes when we need him?

I feel the solution is rather weak.
