Why did he cry at the end

What was he sad about

reply

He was laughing and crying at the same time. I thought maybe he was looking at the sun coming up and was feeling content with his simple life and his daily routines. And the conversation he had with the man from the night before, who told him something about the shadows, made him realize that he won't be able to enjoy these things forever. It made me think that he was commenting on how he was going to die without understanding everything that he wanted to know about the world.

That sounds a bit simplistic.
You are saying he enjoys his life so much that he is crying because he'll die and stop enjoying it eventually?

I believe me was happy and sad because that's what life is.
He clearly had a sad background, with family problems, that were the cause of his isolation.

He enjoyed his life and isolation, but still feels bittersweet about not having a family, not being "normal", seeing people around him coming and going.

As his colleague said at the beginning, it must be lonely sometimes.

Cleaning toilets.

Being in this movie.

I think loneliness. His niece came and probably won't come back for a while, his sister was distant, he was reminded of his (abusive?) father with whom he is estranged, his co-worker left suddenly without paying him back, he was reminded that the bar woman is just a hostess and has a personal life, nothing came from the nought and crosses game or the woman in the park or the woman who borrowed the tape, he visits the shrine possibly in memory of someone he knows, and the hostess's husband made him feel that your life can end suddenly.
