So after changing history for the worse, he goes back to 1960 and then we see him return with the diner intact and 2016 back the way it was...did he have to do anything to change it, or just return after his encounter with Sadie?

Every time he goes back through the rabbit hole, it puts him in the same time and place and "resets" the past. Everything he did to change history was undone just by going through.
