Laura Dern As Andrw Garfield's Mother ???

i saw the trailer for the first time this past weekend and thought
the film quite fascinating. but i assumed Dern played his wife. but
according to an article i read today she plays his mother. say what?
there's only a 16 year difference. how old is Garfield's character
suppose to be that they think they can pass off Dern as his mother?
