How can i start trusting imdb ratings?

I agree with everyone who think this movie sucked.
The plot: they killed his litlle puppy that he got from hes dead wife, i like animals but kill like 50 people for a puppy(and his car) is ridiculous even if they are evil gangstas.

*spoiler*

it made me smile when he gets a new dog in the end, because it was so stupid.

How can K.Reeves ever come back after this?

reply

Your so wrong on so many levels!!!!!

reply

Amen to that. But I think that's the problem many people have with this very entertaining film. They're unable to see it on more than one level.

reply

How many levels do Keanu movies usually have?

reply

LOL. Very few, if any, actually. However, this film has two levels IMHO.

reply

And what are those 2 levels?

I don't have a signature.

reply

Sorry I didn't reply earlier -- I missed this post somehow. The way I see it, one "level" could be termed "reality." That is, how does this film stand up as a reflection of real life? IMHO it does pretty poorly in this area. The other level could be termed "graphic novel" which is a fictionalized, exaggerated reflection of "real life." This level is denoted by the large, overdone subtitles . I believe this film is actually based on a published graphic novel and, as such, I feel it does very well.

reply

I absolutely agree with this. The fight/shoot scenes, the hotel, the respect between Viggo and John were all unrealistic, but that's what I liked about it and I definitely agree with your comparison to a graphic novel.

Other than the Matrix, maybe one or two.

Those seven years of MacGyver finally payed off

that's why it's so good, he's going nuts over a puppy and a car... he's not being petty because for people to make it that personal they're considering doing more but as a plot synopsis there is no cooler a ridiculous reason to go nuts. i don't know how they could make a sequel to this movie.... whatever sets him off next time is going to be lame by comparison.

it should have been dog or car for the first one... they just used everything up. because there is no petty reason to get that upset to go on a killing spree where dozens plummet as those two petty reasons... i just don't know how they're going to come up with a plot...

speed 2 was on a boat, but they didn't use buses, planes and trains for speed 1. that's kind of what they did for the premise of john wick, use up every cool petty reason from the start.

reply

movie was laughable. its like the somebody trying too hard to be cool and ends up looking silly

reply

wrong, John Wick doesn't even need to try to be cool, he is cool since he was conceived

reply

The way to do a sequel is not to have another petty thing set him off. That's what the Taken 2 did, try to recapture the success of the original by remaking the first. What they ought to do is either show him after he has slipped back into the underworld, and do something like show him doing a job that goes wrong or show his attempts to not slip back into his old life, but have him inevitably end up going back because he doesn't have a reason not to anymore.

The real strength of the movie wasn't in it's story, it's story was mostly a showcase for some really amazing action and some cool characters, the movie's true strength (aside from the action) was the world building. Honestly, for me the sequel wouldn't even have to be about John Wick, so long as its in the same world.

reply

How about the grandson of an Irish crime boss named O'Lynn bumps into Wick in a supermarket and knocks a carton of organic eggs -- free range of course -- out of our hero's hands. Wick really wanted an omelette and decides to kill everyone in O'Lynn's crime network to get revenge. The twist is that O'Lynn was Wick's mentor and taught him everything he knows. The other twist is that Wick has become an alcoholic after his new dog ran away on St. Patty's day when Wick was celebrating by himself and passed out. The addiction to booze slows Wick down from time to time, putting our hero in further peril. But, in John Wick 2, you gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

reply

Worth a LOL. Nice post.

Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

reply

It was an awesome movie.

Have you lost your spouse?
Are you singularly focused as Wick is described?

Wick is a killer. His ledger is red & his soul is damned.
He is one dark-hearted man.

Then he meet an angel, a ray of salvation.
He wants out so he is given an impossible job WHICH HE COMPLETES.

He is horrifying. That boss guy is terrified of him & rightly so.

Too soon Wick's salvation is taken from him. His light is gone.
He is lost. She knew this so she arranged for something else for him to love. A last chance to stay in the light.

And some spoiled brat takes that from him.

What do you expect a dark heart to do? The one people send to kill the boogieman?

reply

I agree. You described his dark heart perfectly and it did not seem unbelievable to me that he went on a rampage.I don't go out of my way to see violent/gangster movies but this one caught my eye because it's so well done for this genre. This movie was a perfect vehicle for Keanu Reeves as well. I really hope they make a part 2.

reply

Yes, some gangsters kill his second dog and lot of violence happens. Then he gets a cat and another sequel is assured.

reply

This was always meant to be a trilogy...you can only milk the "you killed my dog, prepare to die" card for so long.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

[deleted]

We all got this. It doesn't remove the fact that this is just an other boring and cliché movie like there are thousand others.

reply

You have to expect a little score inflation in big budget movies. Studios know that a lot of fans look at IMDB ratings before deciding to see a movie and as such, they will spike the ratings using a bunch of bogus IMDB accounts controlled by the studio. Cheap and effective marketing.

"Gold buys a mans silence for a time. A bolt to the heart buys it forever"

reply

He led a quiet life because of his wife. Now she is gone. She sent a new life to him from beyond the grave.
They killed that life and he was reborn yet again.
Before his wife he was a hired gun. He did whatever was asked.
When he wanted to leave that live they gave him an impossible task.
HE DID THE IMPOSSIBLE.
He knew his way of life and that of his (boss) was wrong.
He went straight because of his wife.
Now he doesn't really care.
A life can change for the smallest reasons

reply

You sum it up pretty well. Those who think it was "just a puppy" failed to understand a thing about the movie.

Even if it was only because of the puppy's death, I would have laughed my ass off seeing him killing those russian bastards.

reply

Big budget? Did we watch the same movie?

This isn't The Matrix, Transformers or Avatar.

Actually I just checked out the budget and it's a very reasonable $20 million.

Transformers 4's budget was $210 million.

Do you see what a big budget is?

Now how is $20 million a big budget?

Explain.

reply

Silly premise...and this wasn't a "big budget" movie.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

After watching this movie, you can trust in one thing. If you mess with the bull, you get the horns.

Just leave it alone, kid.

reply

You have to learn things such as "genre" and what an "action movie" is.

reply

I agree that action is not my favourite genre but i think it is getting worse over the years.
I hope i have to "learn" from better "movies" what a action movie is 8).
I think its weird K. Reeves said yes to this movie with so weak plot, the reason i decided to watch it was because K. Reeves was in it, Matrix is one of my favourite movies

reply

I think the op doesn't understand

It's not WHAT they did, its WHO they did it to.

reply

I agree completely. Worst and dumbest movie I have seen in years. This is what happens when you let Keanu Reeves stunt double from the Matrix direct a movie, and some guy who has written two C movies I never heard of combine to form the dumbest movie of 2014. 0 plot, 0 point, 0 characterization...all style over substance and without even an attempt at plot I can't even enjoy that..and ended up laughing at how stupid it was and hoping for it to be over.

(That is why Keanu did the movie, because his buddy and stunt double was director, Keanu probably talked his way into getting his buddy the opportunity...unfortunately he was stunt double for a reason and can't write or direct to save his life.)

This movie was so bad it made me want to physically break something until it was finally over. So so bad.

reply

Wow. I guess you guys that hated it so much can go back to watching standard fare like EastEnders or Dallas or whatever... So the story was a bit thin, yes, but it was beautifully shot, thematically I thought it looked awesome, also had a nice gritty, ambient atmosphere to it as well. They weren't trying to make the next Godfather or Shawshank with this film,...

Maybe try looking beyond just story and plot sometimes, you might just catch something else to like.. Maybe the sequel will have more story to it i.e like with the The Raid movies.

reply

"Klute" had a nice "atmosphere" to it. (its from the 70's) far superior to this garbage film, but I Wasn't expecting much from stuntmen who were friends with Keanu to get the gig. Horrible, worst plot, worst story of 2014-2015. Literally the worst story and the worst plot of any movie I have seen in the last two years, and I see alot of movies. 5/10 medciore garbage and it only gets a 5 for "looking cool". The music and mood were OK. It looks like a kindergarden drawing compared to a true noir film or an actually well written and acted movie, which this is not and never will be.

Keanu Reeves himself might as well have directed it, it wouldn't have made much difference. Horrible.

reply

Ok... Well, not that I even want to try to change your mind, after all it's your opinion, but I think you're a bit hard for a movie that doesn't even pretend to be more than an action movie. And why are you looking so down to the directors of the film? These "stuntmen" have earned there stripes as second unit directors, so for a movie like this, that's just perfect. The action sequences are all very well shot, you can see every detail and they provide you with a good overview. Big difference with action movies where there are way too much shaky cams and where they zoom in too deep so you don't know what's happening. So if you didn't like the movie, I really cannot understand what the directors did wrong for you.

Ok, the story was thin. But if you make a problem of that, then you probably just don't like action movies.

reply

Yea well majority loved it, oh and also pretty high ratings. So you lose???

reply

Uh no. It has an average 7.2 on IMDB which is dropping like a rock as more people see it. (It had a 7.8 has already dropped to 7.2 in like 6 months..will go down to a 6 something soon...closer to where it should be.)

It has a mediocre even worse 68 score on metacritic...with a number of negative reviews from USA Today and the New York Post, and others, in which they say:

"Aside from the very occasional stab with a dagger, John prefers to shoot people at point-blank range. It gets old fast."

"John Wick serves up a noxious, clashing blend of hyper-realistic and cartoonish violence. Too bad there's no cinema decontaminating service that can wash our memories clean of such useless gore."

and the best one...

"Sorry, Keanu, but you stole my time and you murdered my brain cells."

Thats multiple professional critics all agreeing that is SUCKED SO BAD, SO SO SO BAD, it was HORRIBLE, the rating is dropping like a rock on here, and it was the dumbest plot of any film I have seen in YEARS. 3/10 GARBAGE IS BEING KIND. Will be remembered as a 5.8 dumb action movie once its shown on TV and kills more peoples brain cells. HORRENDOUS, PAINFULLY, BAD.

reply

Either so, part two is on it's way so it must have done something right for some people.

And there are indeed, like you say, bad reviews. But the movie has also good reviews.

In the end, it doesn't matter what critics say. Obviously, you didn't like it but I guess you just don't like action movies. The fact that you find the quote "Sorry, Keanu, but you stole my time and you murdered my brain cells."
the best one says it all... What do you expect? Shakespeare?
Action movies are easy to bash because the story line is thin in the lot of them. Well newsflash, it comes with the genre. Same problem with horror, comedy and dance movies.

And frankly you make poor arguments. All you can say it's the dumbest plot, while there's much, much worse out there. So all I see in your last post are the nice words in capital like horrible, bad, etc. but little argument.

reply

Nope, I like action movies, good action movies. I don't like bad movies that are made by stuntmen that have the story level of a coloring book. A 6-year old kid could have written the idea for this movie. Its that bad. HORRIBLE. WORST MOVIE I HAVE SEEN ALL YEAR.

reply

You need to see more movies.

Why do people think their opinion is definitive? It's not. It's your opinion.

reply

Will be remembered as a 5.8 dumb action movie
Only time will tell, but I suspect this won't be the case. Sure, the IMDb rating might go down, maybe even to the 6 range (I'm expecting more in the lines of 6.5 than 5.8), but in 10 years, unless there is whole bunch of decent action movies which will upset the whole thing*, "John Wick" will be remembered as a stylish guilty pleasure, not a classic, but something that you cram out to have a movie evening with your pals. Possibly in the lines of "Shoot 'em Up", altough not as much fun...

* - the way thing are going now I don't see that happening. CGI, CGI and CGI, with clued in romantic plots and "funnier moments" to lighten the mood have pretty much killed off the serious action genre. Sure, there are movies where this works (good 'ol T2 for example), but most fail spectacularly when going this route. Especially when they insist on moving the camera, instead of the actor.

reply

Mentions critics disliked the film. Doesn't use the largest source of critic consensus to confirm opinion. Fail. RT loved the film. IMDb loved the film. The money shows people loved the film. I'm sorry, you're considerably outnumbered. Move along, this isn't the bad film you're looking for.

Don't like what I'm saying? Then call 1800-Ima-CryBaby and ask for Waaaaaa.

reply

Tell the truth. You wanted to be a film director and it didn't work out.

Is that why you complained 3 times about "the director only got the gig cause he was Keanu's friend"? Angry at nepotism cause it didn't work out for you?

I'm just curious, honestly.

If you did try to be a director, maybe it didn't work out because you believe critics' opinions matter. Critics know nothing about making movies, that's why they write about them.

reply

What about the film critics who have gone on to BE directors? (Peter Bogdanovich, Francois Truffaut, Rod Lurie... ) It's not as simplistic as you make it out to be.

&#x22Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

It is in like 99.999% of the cases

If you think about it your examples are exceptions

Film directors set out to direct

Critics dream of being directors, realize they aren't any good, give up, and get a job that consists of telling others what they did right and wrong. Not an exciting or productive career

Truffaut said in many interviews that he always set out to be a director and only became a critic briefly as a stepping stone

He never wanted to be a critic. He had his plan laid out and saw it through

reply

LOL. Your "all critics are failed directors" spiel is truly laughable as you clearly don't have a clue what you're talking about, even if you'd like to believe real hard that what you're saying is true.
A few failed directors may end up as critics, but they're the really rare exception. Check out the bio of any pro critic associated with a major outlet, and go back 50+ years if you like, and you'll quickly see how full of crap you are.

Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

reply

Yes, cause they failed 50 years ago and they got stuck in a losers job

Happens to a lot people

Most people actually

reply

Just sticking with your BS despite the facts, and no interest in verifying them or making pertinent sense (my 50+ mention meant: go as far back as you like); speaking of loser...

Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

reply

The problem is that you think that they might have tried to be a director, then failed, then became critics

That's not what I'm saying

I'm saying the majority of them wanted to make movies, then realised they didn't even have the b**ls to try, and got a lame-o job telling other people what's good and what isn't

For a living

And that's pathetic

reply

they got stuck in a losers job

They get paid to watch movies, and talk about them.

They get paid to do something something that you pay to do.

Think about that for a while.

Quidquid Latinae dictum sit, altum viditur.

reply

Uh no. It has an average 7.2 on IMDB which is dropping...
Love the way you use the irony. Many here might have missed it.

reply

It's 2017, the rating is 7.2, sure is "dropping like a rock".

reply

Well, in two years it's "dropped like a rock" up to 7.3.
7.3 is pretty respectable.
You're entitled to your opinion but accept the fact that it's just that.

reply

Worst and dumbest movie I have seen in years.
Such sheltered lives...

I disagree with everyone who thinks this movie sucked. There, that was easy.
